Molecules confined inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) behave quite differently from their bulk analogues. In this Letter we present temperature-dependent (4.2 K up to room temperature) photoluminescence (PL) spectra of water-filled and empty single-chirality (6,5) SWCNTs. Superimposed on a linear temperature-dependent PL spectral shift of the empty SWCNTs, an additional stepwise PL spectral shift of the water-filled SWCNTs is observed at ∼150 K. With the empty SWCNTs serving as an ideal reference system, we assign this shift to temperature-induced changes occurring in the single-file chain of water molecules encapsulated in the tubes. Our molecular dynamics simulations further support the occurrence of a quasiphase transition of the orientational order of the water dipoles in the single-file chain.

Rhombohedral-stacked transition-metal dichalcogenides (3R-TMDs), which are distinct from their hexagonal counterparts, exhibit higher carrier mobility, sliding ferroelectricity, and coherently enhanced nonlinear optical responses. However, surface epitaxial growth of large multilayer 3R-TMD single crystals is difficult. We report an interfacial epitaxy methodology for their growth of several compositions, including molybdenum disulfide (MoS), molybdenum diselenide, tungsten disulfide, tungsten diselenide, niobium disulfide, niobium diselenide, and molybdenum sulfoselenide.

The topological phase transition in the optical field is determined during the quasi-phase matched second harmonic frequency conversion process. The mapping relationship between the corresponding topological invariant and the phase parameters is derived, and two critical transition points are obtained.

Studying the structure and dynamics of nano-confined water inside carbon nanotubes has consistently attracted the wide-spread interest of researchers. In the present work, molecular dynamics simulations indicated internal nonwetting behavior for the central region of the long and narrow single-wall carbon nanotube (5,5) (SWNT) and showed that continuous single-file water molecules are not formed through it. Unlike the SWNT, by adding boron nitride nanotubes (6,6) as an outer wall to the SWNT, a continuously long single-file water chain is formed through the double-walled carbon and boron nitride hetero-nanotube (DWHNT) and thorough internal wetting of the DWHNT is observed.
