Background: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is characterized by high mortality rates and various complications, including skeletal muscle atrophy, which significantly exacerbates its outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, the mechanistic understanding of the relationship between skeletal muscle and the pancreas in SAP remains limited. Our study aimed to elucidate this "organ crosstalk" and its potential implications.

Introduction: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by diffuse lung injury. The impact of pre-existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema on ARDS pathogenesis is not well characterized.
Methods: Secondary analysis of ARDS patients enrolled in the Acute Lung Injury Registry and Biospecimen Repository at the University of Pittsburgh between June 2012 and September 2021.

One of the key challenges in Big Data for clinical research and healthcare is how to integrate new sources of data, whose relation to disease processes are often not well understood, with multiple classical clinical measurements that have been used by clinicians for years to describe disease processes and interpret therapeutic outcomes. Without such integration, even the most promising data from emerging technologies may have limited, if any, clinical utility. This paper presents an approach to address this challenge, illustrated through an example in Parkinson's Disease (PD) management.

The study aimed to document factors affecting willingness to engage in biospecimen donation for substance use research among Black and Hispanic/Latinx sexual and gender minority (SGM) people. From May to July 2022, we interviewed 22 Black and Hispanic/Latinx SGM people from The PRIDE Study, a cohort of SGM people in the United States and its territories, using Zoom videoconferencing software. Fourteen participants were sexual minority people, and eight participants were gender minority people.

Aims/hypothesis: The aim of this work was to explore molecular amino acids (AAs) and related structures of HLA-DQA1-DQB1 that underlie its contribution to the progression from stages 1 or 2 to stage 3 type 1 diabetes.
Methods: Using high-resolution DQA1 and DQB1 genotypes from 1216 participants in the Diabetes Prevention Trial-Type 1 and the Diabetes Prevention Trial, we applied hierarchically organised haplotype association analysis (HOH) to decipher which AAs contributed to the associations of DQ with disease and their structural properties. HOH relied on the Cox regression to quantify the association of DQ with time-to-onset of type 1 diabetes.
