Despite recent developments and new treatments in ophthalmology there is nothing available to cure retinal degenerations like Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) yet. One of the most advanced approaches to treat people that have gone blind due to RP is to replace the function of the degenerated photoreceptors by a microelectronic neuroprosthetic device. Basically, this subretinal active implant transforms the incoming light into electric pulses to stimulate the remaining cells of the retina. The functional time of such devices is a crucial aspect. In this paper the laboratory and clinical reliability of the two active subretinal implants Alpha IMS and Alpha AMS is presented. Based on clinical data the median operating life of the Alpha AMS is estimated to be 3.3 years with a one-sided lower 75 % confidence level of 2.0 years. This data shows a significant improvement of the device lifetime compared to the previous device Alpha IMS which shows a median lifetime of 0.6 years with a lower confidence bound (75 %) of 0.5 years. The results are in good agreement with laboratory data from accelerated aging tests of the implant components, showing an estimated median lifetime for Alpha IMS components of 0.7 years compared to the improved lifetime of Alpha AMS of 4.7 years.

Background: It is important to timely capture the fluctuation of the symptoms related to major depressive disorder (MDD). However, most conventionally used assessment tools for MDD symptoms are not designed for real-time assessment. The Immediate Mood Scaler (IMS) is suitable for the real-time evaluation of the mood of patients with MDD.

In order to characterize the volatile chemical components of processed by different Traditional Chinese Medicine Processing methods and establish fingerprint profiles, headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) technology was employed to detect, identify, and analyze processed by five different methods. Fingerprint profiles of volatile chemical components of processed by different methods were established; a total of 85 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in the experiment, including esters, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, terpenes, olefinic compounds, nitrogen compounds, lactones, pyrazines, sulfur compounds, thiophenes, acid, and thiazoles. Principal component analysis (PCA), Orthogonal Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), and Pearson correlation analysis methods were used to cluster and analyze the detected chemical substances and their contents.

Inflammation drives the initiation and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Platelets, increasingly recognized as immune cells, are activated and increased in the lungs of patients with PH. Platelet activation leads to the release of α-granule chemokines, many of which are implicated in PH.

Introduction: Carboxypeptidase, a member of the metallopeptidase M32 family, catalyses the C-terminal hydrolysis of a variety of peptides and proteins in the presence of metal ions.
Objective: To characterize Leishmania donovani carboxypeptidase (LdCP) in miltefosine (MIL) drug-resistant parasites.
Methods: We performed the MTT assay and cell cycle analysis to confirm the MIL resistance of clinical isolates.

The glucoconjugation between linear chimeric α-(1→4)- and α-(1→6)-glucosidic segments exhibits functional properties throughout their structure. In this study, we enzymatically synthesized three new series of chimeric nonreducing isomaltomegalosaccharides (N-IMS-n/m), each featuring a constant n, α-(1→4)-segment (average degree of polymerization, DP = 22-25) at the nonreducing terminal, and varying m, α-(1→6)-main chain lengths (DP = 7-53). The synthesized compounds-N-IMS-25/7, N-IMS-24/19, and N-IMS-22/53-were compared to amylose (DP = 28) and previous samples of N-IMS-15/35 and D-IMS-28.
