Chemical substances with potential to disrupt endocrine systems have been detected in aquatic environments worldwide, making necessary the investigation about water treatments able to inhibit such potential. The present work aimed to assess the efficiency for removing endocrine disruptors (with estrogenic and androgenic activity) of three simple and inexpensive substrates that could be potentially used in sectors or regions with limited resources: powdered activated carbon (PAC), powdered natural zeolite (ZEO) (both at a concentration of 500 mg L) and natural aquatic humic substances (AHS) (at 30 mg L). MilliQ-water and mature water from fish facilities (aquarium water, AW), were artificially spiked with 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol and dihydrotestosterone. Moreover, effluent samples from waste water treatment plants (WWTP) were also submitted to the remediation treatments. Estrogenic and androgenic activities were assessed with two cell lines permanently transfected with luciferase as reporter gene under the control of hormone receptors: AR-EcoScreen containing the human androgen receptor and HER-LUC transfected with the sea bass estrogen receptor. PAC was efficiently removing the estrogenic and androgenic compounds added to milliQ and AW. However, androgenic activity detected in WWTP effluents was only reduced after treatment with ZEO. The higher surface area of PAC could have facilitated the removal of spiked hormones in clean waters. However, it is possible that the substances responsible of the hormonal activity in WWTP have adsorbed to micro and nanoparticles present in suspension that would have been retained with higher efficiency by ZEO that show pores of several microns in size.

Pyrethroids, which are widely utilized in agriculture, household products, and public health for their potent insecticidal properties, elicit significant concerns regarding their potential endocrine-disrupting effects. However, previous studies have yielded inconsistent data, largely due to the absence of a standardized screening system. To address this limitation, the present study introduces an Integrated Approach to Testing and Assessment (IATA) to evaluate the endocrine-disrupting potential of pyrethroids, aligned with the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) framework.

Transgender (TG) people are individuals whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth do not match. They often undergo gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), a medical intervention that allows the acquisition of secondary sex characteristics more aligned with their individual gender identity, providing consistent results in the improvement of numerous socio-psychological variables. However, GAHT targets different body systems, and some side effects are recorded, although not yet fully identified and characterized.

Minimal study focused on the association between mixed pollutants in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and their reproductive health risks. Utilizing a novel quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) integrated machine learning algorithms, we evaluated the mixed reproductive health risks associated with phthalates (PAEs) and organophosphates (OPEs) exposure by assessing the affinities of these compounds binding to estrogen receptors (ER) and androgen receptors (AR). The mixed toxicity equivalent factor (TEF) and mixed toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ) by the QSAR model were all smaller than the sum TEF and TEQ of individual PAEs and OPEs, which may be due to the antagonistic effect of PAEs and OPEs monomers on reproductive toxicity.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynecological disease accompanied by multiple clinical features, including anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology, leading to infertility. Formononetin (FMN), which is a major bioactive isoflavone compound in Astragalus membranaceus, exerts anti-inflammatory effects. However, whether FMN is effective in the treatment of PCOS remains unknown.

As the volume of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) continues to rise, a significant portion is disposed of in the environment, with only a small fraction being recycled. Both disposal and recycling pose unknown health risks that require immediate attention. Existing knowledge of WEEE plastic toxicity is limited and mostly relies on epidemiological data and association studies, with few insights into the underlying toxicity mechanisms.
