The crystallization of amorphous solid water (ASW) nanoscale films was investigated using reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Two ASW film configurations were studied. In one case the ASW film was deposited on top of and capped with a decane layer ("sandwich" configuration). In the other case, the ASW film was deposited on top of a decane layer and not capped ("no cap" configuration). Crystallization of ASW films in the "sandwich" configuration is about eight times slower than in the "no cap." Selective placement of an isotopic layer (5% DO in HO) at various positions in an ASW (HO) film was used to determine the crystallization mechanism. In the "sandwich" configuration, the crystallization kinetics were independent of the isotopic layer placement whereas in the "no cap" configuration the closer the isotopic layer was to the vacuum interface, the earlier the isotopic layer crystallized. These results are consistent with a mechanism whereby the decane overlayer suppresses surface nucleation and provide evidence that the observed ASW crystallization in "sandwich" films is the result of uniform bulk nucleation.

Sodium alginate is a highly promising biopolymer for use as an eco-friendly/green corrosion inhibitor (CI), despite its limited solubility. In this study, a green and water-soluble modified sodium alginate (MSA) salt was synthesized and employed as a CI on pipeline N80 carbon steel (N80CS) in artificial sea water (ASW) medium. Various analytical tools related to surface and structure were utilized to describe the properties of the newly synthesized MSA polymer.

Plant extracts are increasingly being examined in the corrosion inhibition of metal and alloys in various environments due to their potent antioxidant properties. The use of L. aqueous extract (AAE) as an aluminium alloy 5083 (ALA) corrosion inhibitor in artificial seawater (ASW) was investigated using electrochemical tests and spectroscopy tools, while the active biocompounds found in AAE were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Restricted migration of reactive species limits chemical transformations within interstellar and cometary ices. We report the migration of CO from clathrate hydrate (CH) cages to amorphous solid water (ASW) in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) and cryogenic conditions. Thermal annealing of sequentially deposited CO and HO ice, CO@HO, to 90 K resulted in the partitioning of CO in 5 and 56 CH cages (CO@5, CO@56).

Mixtures of methanol and amorphous solid water (ASW) ices are observed in the interstellar medium (ISM), where they are subject to irradiation by UV photons and bombardment by charged particles. The charged particles, if at high enough density, induce a local electric field in the ice film that potentially affects the photochemistry of these ices. When CDOD@ASW ices grown at 38 K on a Ru(0001) substrate are irradiated by 193 nm (6.

In general, randomly oriented ice crystallites are formed by heating amorphous solid water (ASW) films at ∼160 K via homogeneous nucleation. Here, we demonstrate that monolayers of methanol and 1-propanol additives incorporated in the multilayer ASW film lead to heterogeneous nucleation at the substrate interface of Pt(111), as evidenced by the occurrence of epitaxial ice growth. The mobility of water in direct contact with the Pt(111) substrate is decreased relative to that in the bulk, but it can be increased via interactions with hydrophobic moieties of alcohols that are segregated to the interfacial region.
