Benzene poisoning, clinical and blood abnormalities in two Brazilian female gas station attendants: two case reports.

Published: January 2017

Background: Brazilian gas station workers are chronically exposed to benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX) during their working time. Describe below two cases of latin female gas station workers with benzene poisoning symptoms and miscarriage history.

Case Presentation: In both cases were identified complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCR) with fluorescence in situ hybridization, applied to whole chromosome paints by chromosomes 1, 2 and 4. The lower natural killer cell (NK) cells have also been observed in cases correspondents, especially the rare type of NK (NKbright) in their peripheral blood cells.

Conclusions: It is known that acquired chromosomal aberrations are positively correlated with cancer and reproductive risk. In concordance, lower NK cytotoxicity increases the risk for cancer, as well. Thus, this is the first study providing hints on a possible causative relation of lower NK cytotoxicity and increase rates of chromosomal rearrangements including CCRs.

City gas stations (CGSs) play a crucial role in ensuring a stable and safe supply of natural gas to urban users. However, as the service time of stations increases and the performance of components deteriorates, concerns about the safety and reliability of these station have grown among operators and local government authorities. This paper proposes a fuzzy reliability assessment methodology for CGSs that considers the polymorphism of component faults and the uncertainties associated with fault relationships, failure probabilities, and fault magnitudes.

This study determined the concentrations and seasonal variations of phthalate esters (PAEs) in water and sediment samples of the receiving stream within the vicinity of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife dumpsite. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pollution status of the study area by determining the levels of PAEs in water and sediment samples. This assessment aimed to understand the presence and extent of phthalate ester pollution in the study area.

Flash drought (FD) events induced by climate change may disrupt the normal hydrological regimes of floodplain lakes and affect the plant-microbe mediated dissimilatory nitrate reduction (DNR), i.e., denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), thus having important consequences for nitrous oxide (NO) emissions and nitrogen (N) retention.

Rate coefficients for ion-polar-molecule reactions between acetonitrile molecules (CHCN) and nitrogen molecular ions (N), which are of importance to the upper atmospheric chemistry of Saturn's moon Titan, were measured for the first time at low translational temperatures. In the experiments, the reaction between sympathetically cooled N ions embedded in laser-cooled Ca Coulomb crystals and velocity-selected acetonitrile molecules generated using a wavy Stark velocity filter was studied to determine the reaction rate coefficients. Capture rate coefficients calculated by the Su-Chesnavich approach and by the perturbed rotational state theory considering the rotational state distribution of CHCN were compared to the experimental rate coefficients.

The absence of a mercaptan compounds analyzer in natural gas pressure reduction stations (PRS) odorizer leads to inaccuracies in the injection dosage, often resulting in quantities beyond standard limits and consequently increasing odorant consumption. Insufficient odorant levels in natural gas can pose safety risks to consumers, as the gas may become odorless at the end of the pipeline. Therefore, accurate determination of the concentration of key odorant compounds in natural gas can reduce both costs and environmental risks.
