AI Article Synopsis

  • The protocol aims to assess both the immediate and long-term impacts of manual treatment and spinal rehabilitation exercises on cervicogenic headaches.
  • It will classify headaches based on the International Headache Society's diagnostic criteria.
  • The study will compare these treatments against either a placebo, sham treatment, or a wait-list control group.

Article Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows: To quantify and compare the short- and long-term effects of manual treatment and spinal rehabilitative exercise for cervicogenic headache, classified according to the International Headache Society's (IHS) diagnostic criteria, with an active or placebo/sham comparison or wait-list control.

An 88-year-old male with a history of cervical spondylosis (status post laminectomy of C2-C3 and laminoplasty of C4-C5), chronic congestive heart failure (CHF), pulmonary embolism, and lumbar spinal stenosis presented to an outpatient sports medicine clinic with neck pain following a fall five days prior due to loss of balance. He reported pain on the left side worsened by movement and accompanied by neck "clicking." A physical exam showed severe limitation in cervical spine extension limited by pain and loss of lordotic curve and a neurologic exam demonstrated weakness in the left leg secondary to a previous back surgery.

Musculoskeletal model predicted paraspinal loading may quick estimate the effect of exercise on spine BMD.

Purpose: Spine is the most commonly found fracture site due to osteoporosis. Combined exercise including high-impact and resistance exercise shows the potential to improve bone mineral density (BMD) in the spine. However, the mechanical loading introduced by exercise, which is the mechanism of BMD changes, has not been investigated.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) significantly impair the quality of life in older adults. Spinal orthoses are commonly used, but their effectiveness is debated. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the impact of different spinal orthoses on pain, functionality, and quality of life in patients with OVFs.

This study examined the acute effects of dynamic stretching at different velocities on the neuromuscular system. Fourteen participants underwent four experimental sessions in random order: (1) control (lying at rest with the ankle in a neutral position); (2) slow velocity dynamic stretching (50 beats/min; SLOW); (3) moderate velocity dynamic stretching (70 beats/min; MOD); and (4) fast velocity dynamic stretching (90 beats/min; FAST). The stretching protocols consisted of four sets of 10 repetitions and targeted the plantar flexor muscles of the right ankle.
