Background: Globally, estimates of cancer cases and deaths have increased since 2018, particularly in Latin America and Caribbean countries. In Antigua and Barbuda, understanding the burden of common cancers such as female breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancers is critical. This study aimed to assess the incidence, trends, and patterns of these four cancers from 2017 to 2021.

This study aims to utilize secondary aluminum dross waste to synthesize Fe-Al layered double hydroxide (Fe-Al LDH) for efficient adsorption of arsenic from drinking water. The synthesis process was based on a multi-step hydrometallurgical approach, in which the aluminum content in the waste was first converted to sodium aluminate. This was followed by the transformation into Fe-Al LDH through a series of processes, including gelation, sol formation, simultaneous precipitation, and aging.

During neuronal synaptic transmission, the exocytotic release of neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles in the presynaptic neuron evokes a change in conductance for one or more types of ligand-gated ion channels in the postsynaptic neuron. The standard method of investigation uses electrophysiological recordings of the postsynaptic response. However, electrophysiological recordings can directly quantify the presynaptic release of neurotransmitters with high temporal resolution by measuring the membrane capacitance before and after exocytosis, as fusion of the membrane of presynaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane increases the total capacitance.

A Prototype Process for Demulsification of Waste Ice Cream.

Food Sci Nutr

January 2025

Dairy and Functional Foods Research Unit, Eastern Regional Research Center, Agricultural Research Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Wyndmoor Pennsylvania USA.

Recovery of the butterfat in waste ice cream may be an opportunity to mitigate food and economic loss. Previous efforts to recover such fat have succeeded in producing a fat-enriched fraction but have not succeeded in demulsifying the fat. In the present study, a method involving a sequence of emulsion-breaking steps is shown to be effective for releasing a majority of the fat from waste ice cream as free, unemulsified oil.

Background: Sacrocolpopexy has become a favored treatment of pelvic organ prolapse due to its durability and efficacy. Sacrocolpopexy has not been standardized and there is no categorization scheme to facilitate communication or research efforts for the procedure. A systematic review was conducted to facilitate construction of a classification system for sacrocolpopexy based on extent of vaginal dissection described in the medical literature.
