Voice perception deficits: neuroanatomical correlates of phonagnosia.

Voice perception (recognition of familiar voices and discrimination of unfamiliar voices) was studied in brain-damaged patients and normal controls. Left- and right-brain-damaged subjects were tested on familiar voices (25 famous males) and 26 pairs of unfamiliar voices. Deficits in recognizing familiar voices were significantly correlated with right-hemisphere damage; discrimination of unfamiliar voices was worse in both clinical groups than in normal controls. Computerized tomographic scans indicated that an intact right parietal-lobe was present in all cases of normal voice recognition, while right parietal-lobe damage was significantly correlated with a deficit in voice recognition. Temporal-lobe damage of either hemisphere was associated with a voice discrimination deficit.

Purpose: Among health researchers, there is a growing appreciation of the importance of the involvement of service users and members of the public. This recognition has not only resulted in involvement guidelines and improved research ethics but also an increasing use of consensus processes with service users and members of the public to determine research priorities and questions and to agree outcomes to be measured in intervention studies. There is, however, limited advice about how to safely involve survivors of violence and abuse in consensus-based studies.

This exploratory study aims to understand athletes' experiences and perceptions of the "Voices of Athletes" (VOA), an athlete support program specifically designed and implemented in the Pacific Islands. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaires and short interviews, data were gathered from 414 athletes (questionnaires) and 104 athletes (interviews) during the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. While a Chi-square test was used for quantitative analysis to assess the association between familiarity with the VOA and interest in learning more about the program, content and thematic analyses were employed to qualitatively examine participants' perceptions and attitudes towards the VOA.

Recognition plays a key role in the social lives of gregarious species, enabling animals to distinguish among social partners and tailor their behaviour accordingly. As domesticated animals regularly interact with humans, as well as members of their own species, we might expect mechanisms used to discriminate between conspecifics to also apply to humans. Given that goats can combine visual and vocal cues to recognise one another, we investigated whether this cross-modal recognition extends to discriminating among familiar humans.
