Our purpose was to evaluate the protective effect of three marine omega-3 sources, fish oil (FO), krill oil (KO), and green-lipped mussel (GLM) against cartilage degradation. Canine cartilage explants were stimulated with either 10 ng/mL interleukin-1β (IL-1β) or IL-1β/oncostatin M (10 ng/mL each) and then treated with various concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 3 and 30 μg/mL), FO, KO, or GLM (250, 500, and 1000 μg/mL) for 28 days. Gene expression was then investigated in primary canine chondrocytes. Our results showed that DHA and EPA as well as omega-3 sources could suppress matrix degradation in cytokine-induced cartilage explants by significantly reducing the increase of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (s-GAGs) and preserving uronic acid and hydroxyproline content (except GLM). These agents were not able to reduce IL-1β-induced IL1B and TNFA expression but were able to down-regulate the expression of the catabolic genes MMP1, MMP3, and MMP13 and up-regulate the anabolic genes AGG and COL2A1; FO and KO were especially effective. Our findings indicated that FO and KO were superior to GLM for their protective effect against proteoglycan and collagen degradation. Hence, FO and KO could serve as promising sources of chondroprotective agents.

Seaweed presents a sustainable alternative source of valuable fatty acids (FAs) involving omega-3 (-3) and omega-6 (). As such, there is great potential to reduce pressure on wild fish populations, helping to combat overfishing and its associated global impacts. This study explored the effect of various environmental factors on the FA content and profile of using indoor photobioreactors.

This study explores the potential of novel feed ingredients for monogastric animals, such as pigs and poultry, to enhance meat quality and nutritional value while reducing the environmental footprint of production. Innovative feed options like black soldier fly larvae, microalga, seaweed, fermented soybean hulls, fortified flaxseed and grape pomace have significantly improved meat quality and nutritional traits. Results indicate that these ingredients enrich meat with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, enhancing nutritional value while improving sensory traits such as flavour, tenderness and colour.

The road of lipid migration in flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) during germination.

Lipids are essential sources of carbon and energy during flaxseed germination; however, the dynamic changes in key lipid metabolites, pathways, and their locations remain unclear. This study revealed that oil bodies migrated from well-distributed locations to the cell wall between 0-2 d, with cell contours gradually blurring during 2-3 d, initiating the germination process. Subsequently, the order of oil body migration was leaf > stem > root during 4-7 d.

Plant-derived oils provide 20%-35% of dietary calories and are a primary source of essential omega-6 (linoleic) and omega-3 (α-linolenic) fatty acids. While traditional breeding has significantly increased yields in key oilseed crops like soybean, sunflower, canola, peanut, and cottonseed, overall gains have plateaued over the past few decades. Oilseed crops also experience substantial yield losses in both prime and marginal agricultural areas due to biotic and abiotic stresses and shifting agro-climates.

Microalgae have garnered a considerable attention as a sustainable substitute as customary feed ingredients for poultry, predominantly due to their extraordinary nutritive profile and purposeful properties. These minuscule organisms are protein rich, retain an ample quantity of essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, thus are capable of improving nutritive value of poultry diets. Microalgae comparatively delivers an outstanding source of protein containing substantial amount of innumerable bioactive complexes, omega-3 fatty acids in addition to the essential amino acids (methionine and lysine), crucial for optimal growth and development.
