For long-lived forest tree species, the understanding of intraspecific variation among populations and their response to water availability can reveal their ability to cope with and adapt to climate change. Dissipation of excess excitation energy, mediated by photoprotective isoprenoids, is an important defense mechanism against drought and high light when photosynthesis is hampered. We used 50-year-old Douglas-fir trees of four provenances at two common garden experiments to characterize provenance-specific variation in photosynthesis and photoprotective mechanisms mediated by essential and non-essential isoprenoids in response to soil water availability and solar radiation. All provenances revealed uniform photoprotective responses to high solar radiation, including increased de-epoxidation of photoprotective xanthophyll cycle pigments and enhanced emission of volatile monoterpenes. In contrast, we observed differences between provenances in response to drought, where provenances sustaining higher CO assimilation rates also revealed increased water-use efficiency, carotenoid-chlorophyll ratios, pools of xanthophyll cycle pigments, β-carotene and stored monoterpenes. Our results demonstrate that local adaptation to contrasting habitats affected chlorophyll-carotenoid ratios, pool sizes of photoprotective xanthophylls, β-carotene, and stored volatile isoprenoids. We conclude that intraspecific variation in isoprenoid-mediated photoprotective mechanisms contributes to the adaptive potential of Douglas-fir provenances to climate change.

Introduction: Dengue is one of the most widespread arboviruses in Latin America and is now affecting areas previously free of transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic and climatic variations appear to have affected the incidence of the disease, abundance of vectors and health programs related to dengue in some countries.
Objective: To analyze the epidemiology of dengue in Paltas, Ecuador (2016-2022), compare the periods before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, examine entomological reports and discuss the possible implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and climatic variations.

Silver-containing nanoparticles (AgCNPs) have attracted increasing concerns because of their potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. However, minimal information is available regarding their concentration, distribution, and speciation in the actual environment. In this work, different species of AgCNPs, including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), silver chloride (AgCl NPs) and silver sulfide (AgS NPs) in water and sediment samples from Taihu Lake were analyzed by a multistep selective dissolution method combined with single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Background: Persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOC) are of great concern for water quality and human health. The recent improvement and availability of high-resolution mass spectrometry in combination with liquid chromatography have widely expanded the potential of analytical workflows for their detection and quantitation in water. Given their high polarity, the detection of some PMOC requires alternative techniques to reversed-phase chromatography, such as hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC).

The rapid upsurge of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has sparked profound interest in their potential as proton conductors for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, proton-conducting behaviors of hydrophobic MOFs remain poorly understood compared with their hydrophilic counterparts, largely due to the absence of a microscopic phase separation structure akin to that found in Nafion membranes. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for regulating the structures and proton conductivities of MOFs by separately incorporating hydrophobic -C(CF)- group alongside hydrophilic -O- and -SO- groups into organic ligands as linkers.
