Wastewater treatment is still a critical issue all over the world. Among examined methods for the decontamination of wastewaters, adsorption is a promising, cheap, environmentally friendly and efficient procedure. There are various types of adsorbents that have been used to remove different pollutants such as agricultural waste, compost, nanomaterials, algae, etc., Chitin (poly-β-(1,4)--acetyl-d-glucosamine) is the second most abundant natural biopolymer and it has attracted scientific attention as an inexpensive adsorbent for toxic metals. This review article provides information about the use of chitin as an adsorbent. A list of chitin adsorbents with maximum adsorption capacity and the best isotherm and kinetic fitting models are provided. Moreover, thermodynamic studies, regeneration studies, the mechanism of adsorption and the experimental conditions are also discussed in depth.

In this study, the hierarchical porous materials for adsorbing mycotoxins were prepared by one-step carbonization-activation method using potassium permanganate (KMnO) and chitin as activators and carbon source, respectively. The hierarchical porous materials had different specific surface area and pore distribution owing to different carbonization temperatures. In this paper, the effects of pH, time and temperature of adsorption as well as the concentration of patulin on the adsorption characteristics were systematically investigated.

In this study, a polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol/hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (PVA/PEG/HACC) ternary composite hydrogel was synthesized using electron-beam radiation. The materials were thoroughly characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, gelation fraction tests, and swelling rate tests. Systematic adsorption experiments revealed that the rate of adsorption of calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) by the PVA/PEG/HACC hydrogel reached 89%.

December 2024

Henan Key Laboratory of Polyoxometalate Chemistry, College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Henan University, Kaifeng, Henan 475004, China.

The development of multifunctional films with rapidly killing microorganisms and adsorbing residual antibiotics in wastewater remains a challenging endeavor. In this work, the chitosan/zinc ion/polyoxometalate (CS/Zn/POM) multifunctional films were prepared by the freeze-drying method using chitosan, ZnO, and POM. Notably, the CS/Zn/POM films exhibited excellent bactericidal properties against Gram-positive/negative bacterial strains including (, 99.

Hubei Key Laboratory of Biomass Resource Chemistry and Environmental Biotechnology, Hubei International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Base of Sustainable Resource and Energy, School of Resource and Environmental Science, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China.

Microplastic remediation in aquatic bodies is essential for the entire ecosystem, but is challenging to achieve with a universal and efficient strategy. Here, we developed a sustainable and environmentally adaptable adsorbent through supramolecular self-assembly of chitin and cellulose. This biomass fibrous framework (Ct-Cel) showcases an excellent adsorption performance for polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate.

Electronic address:

Halogenated carbazoles (HCZs) are prevalent in sediments, pose a risk of entering the human food chain via lotus roots. However, starch, protein, and fat in lotus root complicate determination of HCZs in this food. This study introduces a straightforward, sensitive, and rapid method for detecting four HCZs in lotus roots.
