Pentalenes represent highly reactive Hückel antiaromatics with 8π electrons. Usually, pentalenes are stabilized by incorporation of two benzene rings in a fused fashion. In dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes, however, the high aromaticity of the fused benzene rings compromises the inherent antiaromaticity of the pentalene core. Herein, we disclose that this forfeited antiaromaticity can be restored by fusing four additional aromatic rings onto the peripheral positions of dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes. Such polycyclic pentalenes were prepared by successive transannular cyclizations via in situ-generated tetrakisdehydro[16]annulenes. The thus obtained compounds showed intriguing properties, for example, characteristic absorptions in the visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) region and low reduction potentials. These results hence afford a design principle to produce highly antiaromatic yet stable pentalenes. The antiaromaticity of the pentalene core can be widely tuned via the degree of aromaticity of the peripherally fused rings.

Pentalene (C8H6) and NN- and BB-bridged heterocyclic analogues (BN)4H6, derived by replacement of CC pairs with BN, are taken as  paradigms for tuning of ring-current (anti)aromaticity by variation of π charge, electronegativity and substitution pattern.  Ab initio calculation of maps for the π current density induced in these model systems by a perpendicular external magnetic field exhibits the full range of tropicity, from diatropic aromatic to nonaromatic to paratropic antiaromatic, with a ready rationalisation in terms of an orbital model.  Further calculations on systems of varying charge in which these motifs are embedded in extended PAH systems with naphthalene and phenanthrene 'clamps' show promise for switching between current patterns and related  opto-electronic properties.

Boron-Doped Molecular Carbons Bearing a Formal Boron-Inserted Pentalene: Synthesis, Electronic Structures and Properties.

Org Lett

Two boron-doped molecular carbons (BMCs), featuring one formal boron-inserted pentalene (BP) embedded into the CB or CB polycyclic π-skeleton, were successfully synthesized. Despite their small-size conjugated structures, both of them exhibit unusual broad light absorption, narrow energy gaps, and electron-accepting ability, as well as local antiaromaticity with pseudo 4π electrons. As disclosed, these intriguing physical properties are significantly contributed by the boron atom and pentagonal ring in the BP substructure, thus demonstrating the importance of such BP incorporation into polycyclic π-systems.

Noncovalent Interactions Steer the Formation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

Aromatic molecules play an important role in the chemistry of astronomical environments such as the cold interstellar medium (ISM) and (exo)planetary atmospheres. The observed abundances of (polycyclic) aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzonitrile and cyanonaphthalenes are, however, highly underestimated by astrochemical models. This demonstrates the need for more experimentally verified reaction pathways.

In various astronomical environments such as the interstellar medium or (exo)planetary atmospheres, an interplay of bottom-up growth and top-down destruction processes of (polycyclic) aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) takes place. To get more insight into the interplay of both processes, we disentangle the fragmentation and formation processes that take place upon dissociative ionization of benzonitrile. We build on previous spectroscopic detections of the ionic fragmentation products of benzonitrile and use these as reactants for low-temperature bottom-up ion-molecule reactions with acetylene.

Most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can isomerize with internal energies near to or below the dissociation threshold. The CH group of ions, made up of the naphthalene (Naph) and the azulene (Azu) radical cations, is a prototypical example. CH isomers are important species in the growth kinetics and formation of complex organic molecules, and more generally fragments from larger PAHs, yet information about CH structures is scarce and contradictory.
