With rapid changes in health care and academic medicine, deans and medical educators need to carefully optimize medical education in order to best prepare our students for the future. Fundamentally, it is critical that future medical practitioners develop curious minds that look beyond the obvious to ask questions not yet asked and glean reality. This paper summarizes optimal adult learning, including (for example) concepts such as deliberate practice, active and interactive learning, and the flipped classroom.

This paper explores personal and professional development (PPD) as a key learning domain for the future of medical education and person-centered care. Guided by existing curriculum development models and lessons learned in practice, scenarios from academic and clinical learning environments will guide a theory-driven discussion of concepts and competencies that humanize the practice of medicine, such as emotional intelligence, professional identity formation, lifelong learning and inclusive practice. Factors contributing to contemporary curriculum implementation will be informed by a case study of a PPD program delivered to post-graduate medical students in Australia and propose an action-focused series of next steps to connect past, current and future directions for medical schools and graduates.

This is how Georgia State University College of Law Professor Charity Scott introduced the concept of mindfulness to numerous law students and lawyers. Aware that her skeptical, mind-driven audience needed a clear definition for a practice that seemed curious, at best, and esoteric, at worst, she immediately gave us the very lawyerly task of "pars[ing] each of these phrases to understand their importance and relevance to the legal profession" and applying them to our own experience of studying or practicing law. Using scientific evidence, she described the benefits of mindfulness and then invited us to try it and decide for ourselves.

It is widely believed that play and curiosity are key ingredients as children develop models of the world. There is also an emerging consensus that children are Bayesian learners who combine their structured prior beliefs with estimations of the likelihood of new evidence to infer the most probable model of the world. An influential school of thought within developmental psychology, rational constructivism, combines these two ideas to propose that children learn intuitive theories of how the world works in part by engaging in play activities that allow them to gather new information for testing their theories.

Personality traits are broad constructs composed of nuances, operationalized by personality items, that can provide a more granular understanding of personality associations with health outcomes. This study examined the associations between personality nuances and incident dementia and evaluated whether nuances associations replicate across two samples. Health and Retirement Study (HRS, N = 11,400) participants were assessed in 2006/2008, and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA, N = 7453) participants were assessed in 2010/2011 on personality and covariates.
