Motivation: Structural molecular biology depends crucially on computational techniques that compare protein three-dimensional structures and generate structural alignments (the assignment of one-to-one correspondences between subsets of amino acids based on atomic coordinates). Despite its importance, the structural alignment problem has not been formulated, much less solved, in a consistent and reliable way. To overcome these difficulties, we present here a statistical framework for the precise inference of structural alignments, built on the Bayesian and information-theoretic principle of Minimum Message Length (MML). The quality of any alignment is measured by its explanatory power-the amount of lossless compression achieved to explain the protein coordinates using that alignment.

Results: We have implemented this approach in MMLigner , the first program able to infer statistically significant structural alignments. We also demonstrate the reliability of MMLigner 's alignment results when compared with the state of the art. Importantly, MMLigner can also discover different structural alignments of comparable quality, a challenging problem for oligomers and protein complexes.

Background: Educational research highlights active approaches to learning are more effective in knowledge retention and problem-solving. It has long been acknowledged that adapting to more active ways of learning form part of the challenge for new university students as the pedagogical distance between the didactical approach largely followed by secondary school systems the world over differs quite significantly from the often more student-led, critical approach taken by universities. University students encounter various learning challenges, particularly during the transition from secondary school to university.

This study introduces the development of a highly sensitive label-free electrochemical immunosensor specifically designed to detect prostate-specific antigen (PSA). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) coated with Au nanoparticles/polyhedral hollow CoCu bimetallic sulfide (CuCoS) was employed as a sensing interface for the fixation of the monoclonal anti-PSA antibody. The nanoarchitectures enhanced the capacity for loading prostate-specific antibodies (Ab) and effectually boosted electrical conductivity leading to enhance the electrochemical signal and greater sensitivity for the detection of PSA.

Background: Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent condition worldwide, significantly diminishing quality of life and productivity. Except for the alignment change, muscle activation patterns (MAP) have garnered increasing attention as another crucial factor contributing to KOA.

Objective: This study explores the factors, characteristics, and effects of MAP changes caused by KOA, providing a neuromuscular-based causal analysis for the rehabilitation treatment of KOA.

Dielectric polymer capacitors suffer from low discharged energy density and efficiency due to their low breakdown strength, small dielectric constant and large electric hysteresis. Herein, a synergistic enhancement strategy is proposed to significantly increase both breakdown strength and dielectric constant while suppressing hysteresis, through introducing 2-dimensional bismuth layer-structured NaBiTiO micro-sheets and designing a unique bilayer structure. Excitingly, an ultra-high discharged energy density of 25.

The discharge of sewage effluent is a major source of microbial contamination in drinking water sources, necessitating a comprehensive investigation of its impact on pathogenic bacterial communities. This study utilized full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to identify putative pathogenic bacteria and analyze their community structures in drinking water sources subjected to different levels of fecal pollution: urban rivers with low, moderate, and high sewage effluent mixing ratios, and mountain streams with minimal human impact. The sewage effluent itself was also analyzed.
