A special structure is present in the lens design landscape that makes it different from a general global optimization problem: many local minimums are closely related to minimums of simpler problems and can therefore be found by decomposing the search for them in simple steps. We show here that in the design landscape of a wide-angle pinhole lens and in closely related optimization landscapes, all good local minimums found by other methods can be obtained easily with a succession of one-dimensional searches starting from simpler systems. By replacing high-dimensional searches with a succession of one-dimensional searches, the design efficiency can be increased significantly. By combining this method with conventional design methods, the wide-angle pinhole lens can be designed starting from a single lens.

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) persons face considerable challenges accessing sexual and reproductive health care (SRHC), often resulting in poor health outcomes when compared to cisgender persons. Aetiological research predominantly explains these health disparities through a single axis explanation reducing them to factors related to gender identity. Yet, a one-dimensional representation of TGD persons fails to recognize the multiple experiences of systemic oppression that may contribute to poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) experiences and outcomes.

How are arbitrary sequences of verbal information retained and manipulated in working memory? Increasing evidence suggests that serial order in verbal WM is spatially coded and that spatial attention is involved in access and retrieval. Based on the idea that brain areas controlling spatial attention are also involved in oculomotor control, we used eye tracking to reveal how the spatial structure of serial order information is accessed in verbal working memory. In two experiments, participants memorized a sequence of auditory words in the correct order.

40S ribosomal subunits scan mRNA for the start codon by one-dimensional diffusion.

bioRxiv

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics at the School of Medicine and Dentistry & Center for RNA Biology, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA.

During eukaryotic translation initiation, the small (40S) ribosomal subunit is recruited to the 5' cap and subsequently scans the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR) of mRNA in search of the start codon. The molecular mechanism of mRNA scanning remains unclear. Here, using GFP reporters in cells, we show that order-of-magnitude variations in the lengths of unstructured 5' UTRs have a modest effect on protein synthesis.

The class imbalance problem is one of the difficult factors affecting the performance of traditional classifiers. The oversampling technique is the most common way to solve the class imbalance problem. They alleviate the performance impact of the class imbalance problem on traditional machine learning by augmenting minority instance feature representation.

Structural evolution and electronic properties of neutral boron-doped nitrogen clusters.

J Phys Condens Matter

December 2024

School of Mathematics and Physics, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Wuhan 430074, People's Republic of China.

Clusters represent intermediate states between isolated atoms and bulk solids. They serve as model systems to elucidate the physical properties of compounds from the atomic or molecular scale to the macroscopic bulk phase. Here, we perform thorough structure searches of neutral boron doped nitrogen clusters by crystal structural analysis by particle swarm optimization cluster structural prediction and density functional theory calculations.
