The small-angle scattering (SAS) from the Cantor surface fractal on the plane and Koch snowflake is considered. We develop the construction algorithm for the Koch snowflake, which makes possible the recurrence relation for the scattering amplitude. The surface fractals can be decomposed into a sum of surface mass fractals for arbitrary fractal iteration, which enables various approximations for the scattering intensity. It is shown that for the Cantor fractal, one can neglect with good accuracy the correlations between the mass fractal amplitudes, while for the Koch snowflake, these correlations are important. It is shown that nevertheless, correlations can be built in the mass fractal amplitudes, which explains the decay of the scattering intensity I(q) ∼ q, with 1 < D < 2 being the fractal dimension of the perimeter. The curve I(q)q is found to be log-periodic in the fractal region with a period equal to the scaling factor of the fractal. The log-periodicity arises from the self-similarity of the sizes of basic structural units rather than from correlations between their distances. A recurrence relation is obtained for the radius of gyration of the Koch snowflake, which is solved in the limit of infinite iterations. The present analysis allows us to obtain additional information from SAS data, such as the edges of the fractal regions, the fractal iteration number and the scaling factor.

The current paper presents a numerical study of the magnetohydrodynamics natural convection and entropy production of Cu-water nanofluid contained in a porous annulus between a heated Koch snowflake and wavy cylinder with lower temperature with respect to the Koch snowflake. The numerical algorithm is based on the Galerkin Finite Element Method. The impacts of Rayleigh number ( = 10, 10, 10, and 10), Hartman number ( = 0, 25, 50, and 100), Darcy number ( = 10, 10, 10, and 10), nanoparticle volumetric fraction ( = 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%), and the undulations number of the outer wavy cylinder (three cases) on the distributions of isotherms, streamlines, mean Nusselt number (), as well as on total entropy production and Bejan number are thoroughly examined.

Fractal Design Boosts Extrusion-Based 3D Printing of Bone-Mimicking Radial-Gradient Scaffolds.

Research (Wash D C)

Although extrusion-based three-dimensional (EB-3D) printing technique has been widely used in the complex fabrication of bone tissue-engineered scaffolds, a natural bone-like radial-gradient scaffold by this processing method is of huge challenge and still unmet. Inspired by a typical fractal structure of Koch snowflake, for the first time, a fractal-like porous scaffold with a controllable hierarchical gradient in the radial direction is presented via fractal design and then implemented by EB-3D printing. This radial-gradient structure successfully mimics the radially gradual decrease in porosity of natural bone from cancellous bone to cortical bone.

The area of a rough black hole.

We investigate the consequences for the black hole area of introducing fractal structure for the horizon geometry. We create a three-dimensional spherical analogue of a 'Koch Snowflake' using a infinite diminishing hierarchy of touching spheres around the Schwarzschild event horizon. We can create a fractal structure for the horizon with finite volume and infinite (or finite) area.

In this paper, an ultra-wideband terahertz metamaterial absorber is introduced based on a Snowflake Koch Fractal (SKF) dielectric loaded on a sheet of graphene. Instead of multilayered-graphene conventional structures, a single-layered non-structured graphene absorber is presented based on gradient width modulation and cavity method. The structure of the absorber is composed of four layers, which are upper SKF dielectric and metal film layer form two mirrors of an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity to confine terahertz electromagnetic (EM) waves.

November 2017

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street W., Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L7, Canada.

We investigate the plasmonic behavior of Koch snowflake fractal geometries and their possible application as broadband optical antennas. Lithographically defined planar silver Koch fractal antennas were fabricated and characterized with high spatial and spectral resolution using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The experimental data are supported by numerical calculations carried out with a surface integral equation method.
