Background: Frequency volume charts are valuable tools to objectify urine production in patients with nocturia, enuresis or nocturnal incontinence. Analyses of daytime and nighttime urine (=basic collection) or analyses of urine samples collected every 3 h (=extended collection) extend this evaluation by describing circadian patterns of water and solute diuresis (=renal function profiles).

Aim: To assess intra-individual correlation and agreement between renal function profiles provided using basic and extended urine collections, and using two extended urine collections. To create a short-form of the extended collection.

Methods: This prospective observational study was executed at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium. Study participation was open for anyone visiting the hospital. Participants collected one basic and two extended 24-h urine collections. Urinary levels of osmolality, sodium and creatinine were determined.

Results: There was a moderate to strong correlation between results of basic and extended urinalyses. Comparing both extended urinalyses showed a moderate correlation between the eight individual samples and a weak to strong correlation between the mean daytime and nighttime values of renal functions. Different samples could be considered as most representative for mean daytime values, while all samples collected between 03 and 05am showed the highest agreement with mean nighttime values of renal function.

Conclusion: Since there is a good correlation and agreement between basic and extended urine collections to study the mechanisms underlying urine production, the choice of urine sampling method to evaluate urine production depends on the purpose. A nighttime-only urine sample collected between 03 and 05am may be the most practical approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate 3D information estimation from images is crucial for computer vision, and while binocular stereo vision is a common approach, it faces challenges with baseline distance affecting reliability.
  • This research proposes a new method that progressively increases the baseline in multiocular vision, introducing a rectification technique that significantly reduces distortion errors in the images.
  • The method enhances disparity estimation accuracy by 20% for multiocular images and demonstrates superior performance through extensive evaluations against existing methods.

Improved Functionality, Quality, and Shelf Life of -Type Camel Sausage Fortified with Spirulina as a Natural Ingredient.

Foods

December 2024

Facultad de Veterinaria, Instituto Agroalimentario de Aragón-IA2, Universidad de Zaragoza-CITA, 50013 Zaragoza, Spain.

The objective of the present work was to examine the effect of incorporating spirulina powder (SP) in -type sausages made exclusively with camel meat, as well as to evaluate its physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory quality attributes and its prebiotic potential. The final purpose was to offer an innovative meat product to increase camel meat consumption. Several innovative fresh sausage formulations were developed using SP (00, 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg) and stored under vacuum conditions with refrigeration at 1 ± 1 °C for 35 days.

The globalization of the food industry chain and the increasing complexity of the food supply chain present significant challenges for food authenticity and raw material processing. Food authenticity identification now extends beyond mere adulteration recognition to include quality evaluation, label compliance, traceability determination, and other quality-related aspects. Consequently, the development of high-throughput, accurate, and rapid analytical techniques is essential to meet these diversified needs.

Polymeric Coatings with Electrolyzed Acidic Water: A Novel Approach to Extending Egg Shelf Life and Quality.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Food Packaging and Shelf Life Research Group, Food Engineering Department, Universidad de Cartagena, Cartagena 130015, Colombia.

Electrolyzed acidic water (EAW) contains hypochlorous acid as its active compound, which is a potent antimicrobial. It was encapsulated in polymeric coatings and applied to the surface of eggs. The antimicrobial activity and the ability to extend the shelf life of eggs at ambient temperature for 45 days were evaluated, by physical, microbiological, and sensory analyses.
