Developing low-cost and highly-efficient non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an attractively alternative strategy to solve the environmental pollution problems and energy demands. In this study, metal-organic framework (MOF) derived porous cobalt poly-phosphide (CoP) concave polyhedrons are prepared and explored as superior bifunctional electrocatalysts for the HER and OER. The prepared MOF derived CoP concave polyhedrons show excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability towards the HER and OER in both acidic and alkaline media, with the Tafel slopes of 53 mV dec and 76 mV dec and a current density of 10 mA cm at the overpotentials of -78 and 343 mV for the HER and OER, respectively, which are remarkably superior to those of the transition metal phosphides (TMPs) and comparable to those of the commercial precious metal catalysts. In addition, they also offer efficient catalytic activities and durabilities under neutral and basic conditions for the HER. The results of our study may shed light on the direction towards highly efficient bifunctional TMP electrocatalysts with high phosphorous component.

Blood Compatibility of Drug-Inorganic Hybrid in Human Blood: Red Blood Cell Hitchhiking and Soft Protein Corona.

Materials (Basel)

September 2023

Department of Energy and Materials Engineering, Dongguk University-Seoul, Seoul 04620, Republic of Korea.

A drug-delivery system consisting of an inorganic host-layered double hydroxide (LDH)-and an anticancer drug-methotrexate (MTX)-was prepared via the intercalation route (MTX-LDH), and its hematocompatibility was investigated. Hemolysis, a red blood cell counting assay, and optical microscopy revealed that the MTX-LDH had no harmful toxic effect on blood cells. Both scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy exhibited that the MTX-LDH particles softly landed on the concave part inred blood cells without serious morphological changes of the cells.

Alternative to Reduced Stresses on the Upper Extremity in a Standing Workstation.

Hum Factors

December 2023

Major in Industrial Data Science & Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering, Pusan National University, Busan, Korea.

Objective: This study evaluated a standing armrest to provide more acceptable ergonomic guidelines that may reduce the cost of standing computer workstations.

Background: Of the many advantages of standing workstations, there have been no efforts to minimize the biomechanical cost, such as larger wrist extension and greater forearm muscle activity than sitting.

Method: Sixteen participants were asked to perform a typing task under a combination of the following factors: (1) desk shape (rectangular and concave); (2) desk height (0, +5, -5 cm from 90° elbow flexion); and (3) monitor height (0, -10 cm from the eyes).

The rational design of the surface structure and morphology characteristics of the catalyst at atomic level are the key to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in lithium-oxygen (Li-O) battery. Here a series of cobalt phosphide (CoP) electrocatalysts with a variety of index facets are successfully prepared including concave polyhedrons CoP exposing with (211) crystal planes (CoP CPHs) spherical nanoparticles CoP exposed with (011) crystal planes and polyhedron particles CoP exposing with (011) and (111) crystal planes. The results show that CoP CPHs based Li-O battery presents a large discharge capacity of 33743 mA h g at current density of 50 mA g and a remarkable long cycle life of up to 950 h.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how altered trunk shape and body alignment in adolescents with Lenke 1 thoracic idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affect balance control during walking, focusing on the center of mass (COM) and center of pressure (COP) dynamics.
  • Sixteen adolescents with AIS and sixteen healthy peers were assessed for balance through kinematic measurements during level walking, analyzing inclination angles (IA), rate of change of IA (RCIA), and jerk index.
  • Results indicated that AIS patients exhibited less smooth motion of COM relative to COP, increased jerkiness, and significant differences in IA and RCIA compared to healthy controls, with moderate to strong correlations existing between these balance metrics and the degree of spinal curvature (Cobb angle).
