Purpose: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as carriers for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this process, MWCNTs were coated with mesoporous silica (MWCNT-Silica) for uniform and regular loading of AgNPs on the MWCNTs. In addition, astaxanthin (AST) extract was used as a reducing agent for silver ions to enhance the antioxidant, antibiofilm, and anticancer activities of AgNPs.

Independent evolution of oleate hydratase clades in Bacillales reflects molecular convergence.

Front Mol Biosci

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, United States.

Oleate hydratase (OhyA), a flavoenzyme that catalyzes the hydration of unsaturated fatty acids, has been identified in various Bacillales organisms, including those in the , , , and genera. In this study, we combine structural biology with molecular and phylogenetic analyses to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of the OhyA protein family within the Bacillales order. Our evolutionary analysis reveals two distinct OhyA clades (clade I and clade II) within Bacillales that, while sharing catalytic function, exhibit significant genomic and structural differences.

Effect of phycocyanin and phycoerythrin on antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of refrigerated low-fat yogurt and cream cheese.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science Ayatollah Amoli Branch, Islamic Azad University, Amol, Iran.

Cyanobacterial phycobiliproteins, such as phycoerythrin (PE) and phycocyanin (PC), are colored potential bioactive proteins that have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In this study, we formulated a new food prototype based on PE and PC-fortified low-fat yogurt and cream cheese. Four distinct low-fat yogurt and cream cheese products were manufactured, including a control group (No PE and PC), samples produced with phycoerythrin (+ PE), samples produced with phycocyanin (+ PC), and samples produced with both phycoerythrin and phycocyanin (PC + PE).

December 2024

Department of Dental Hygiene, College of Software and Digital Healthcare Convergence, Yonsei University 1, Yonseidae-gil, Wonju, Gangwon-do 26493, South Korea. Electronic address:

Background: This study aimed to determine the autofluorescence characteristics influenced by interactions between Streptococcus mutans (SM) and pneumonia-related microorganisms using a quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology.

Methods: The microbial strains used were Acinetobacter baumannii (AB), Staphylococcus aureus (SA), Escherichia coli (EC), Candida albicans (CA), and SM. Fluorescence was captured using QLF technology.
