Purpose: To access the potential effect of vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade on the choroid.
Methods: Eighteen patients (18 eyes) who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy with 1,000-cSt silicone oil tamponade for proliferative vitreoretinopathy retinal detachment were included in this retrospective study. All patients underwent ophthalmologic examinations before treatment and 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months after vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade. Choroidal thickness was measured using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering) in a horizontal and vertical section beneath the fovea.
Results: Choroidal thickness statistically significantly decreased till 3 months after pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade: under the center of the fovea (P = 0.014) and in the temporal (P = 0.029), superior (P = 0.046), and inferior areas, determined at 1,500 μm from the center of the fovea (P = 0.030). After 6 months, the desired effect in the form of a decrease in the choroidal thickness was even more prominent, both under the center of the fovea (P < 0.001) and in the nasal (P < 0.001), temporal (P < 0.001), superior (P < 0.001), and inferior areas at 1,500 μm from the center of the fovea (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: Choroidal thickness is reduced in eyes receiving silicone oil intraocular tamponade. Silicone oil tamponade may have an impact on the structure and proper functioning of the choroid. The measurements of the choroidal thickness by optical coherence tomography might be a very good tool to detect early changes in choroidal thickness and impact the decision when to remove silicone oil.

Purpose: The purpose is to evaluate the effect of drainage from intentional extramacular holes after internal limiting membrane insertion to treat macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD) in highly myopic eyes.
Methods: This study is a retrospective, observational, and comparative case series that included 25 consecutive highly myopic eyes with MHRD. All eyes underwent standard 23-gauge vitrectomy, inverted internal limiting membrane insertion into the macular hole, subretinal fluid drainage from an intentionally created extramacular retinal hole, and tamponade with either silicone oil (SO group, n = 13) or perfluoropropane (CF group, n = 12).

Polymer Janus nanoparticles with one hard cross-linked polystyrene lobe and one soft film-forming poly(methyl methacrylate--butyl acrylate) lobe were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated emulsion polymerization. The Janus nanoparticles adsorbed to oil/water and air/water interfaces, where the soft lobes coalesced, forming films of thickness between 25 and 250 nm; droplets of silicone oil could be stably encapsulated in polymer in this way. When prepared by mechanical mixing without additives, capsules of diameter 5-500 μm could be prepared, and with additives and application of heat, capsules of diameter around 5 μm were achieved, even with highly viscous silicone oil (20,000 cSt).

Introduction: In facial cosmetic surgery, injectable liquid silicone has been used to augment the cheek and the lips and to camouflage facial wrinkles. However, complications started to arise in 1964 as postoperative silicone granuloma formation. The purpose of this study is to introduce our experience in facial reconstruction after injectable silicon oil with a sequential 3-step approach: transoral surgical excision, full-face fat grafting, and hyaluronic acid filler.

Purpose: To evaluate preoperative and early postoperative factors associated with changes in visual acuity in macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) patients.
Methods: A retrospective review of 59 eyes from 59 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and silicone oil (SiO) tamponade for macula-off RRD. Preoperative and early postoperative characteristics were analyzed using the classification and regression tree (CART) analysis.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are a class of surface that offers low contact angle hysteresis and low tilt angle for water droplet shedding. This property also endows the surface with pinning-free evaporation, which in turn has been exploited for analyte concentration enrichment for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic applications and antibiofouling. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach for creating SLIPS with low contact angle hysteresis and low tilt angle for water shedding by coating the equal-volume mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and silicone oil.
