Three types of chloride-conducting membranes based on polyvinyl chloride, commercial gelatin, and polyvinyldifluoride-hexafluoropolymer are introduced in this report. The polymers are mixed with chloride-containing salts, such as tetrabutylammonium chloride, and cast to form membranes. We studied the structural properties, thermal stability, and electrochemical response of the membranes to understand chloride migration and transport. Finally, the membranes are tested in a prototype solid-state chloride-ion battery setup. The feasibility of the membranes for their potential use in anion batteries is discussed.

The analysis of neural circuits has been revolutionized by optogenetic methods. Light-gated chloride-conducting anion channelrhodopsins (ACRs)-recently emerged as powerful neuron inhibitors. For cells or sub-neuronal compartments with high intracellular chloride concentrations, however, a chloride conductance can have instead an activating effect.

The CLC family encompasses two functional categories of transmembrane proteins: chloride conducting channels and proton-chloride antiporters. All members in this chloride channel/transporter family consist of two identical protein subunits, and each subunit forms an independent ion-transport pathway, a structural architecture known as "double barrel." These CLC proteins serve biological functions ranging from membrane excitability and cell volume regulation to acidification of endosomes.

Glutamate transporters facilitate the removal of this excitatory neurotransmitter from the synapse. Increasing evidence indicates that this process is linked to intrinsic chloride channel activity that is thermodynamically uncoupled from substrate transport. A recent cryo-EM structure of Glt - an archaeal homolog of the glutamate transporters - in an open channel state has shed light on the structural basis for channel opening formed at the interface of two domains within the transporter which is gated by two clusters of hydrophobic residues.

ClC-1 protein channels facilitate rapid passage of chloride ions across cellular membranes, thereby orchestrating skeletal muscle excitability. Malfunction of ClC-1 is associated with myotonia congenita, a disease impairing muscle relaxation. Here, we present the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of human ClC-1, uncovering an architecture reminiscent of that of bovine ClC-K and CLC transporters.

Regulated secretion is an intracellular pathway that is highly conserved from protists to humans. Granin family proteins were proposed to participate in the biogenesis, maturation and release of secretory granules in this pathway. However, the exact molecular mechanisms underlying the intracellular functions of the granin family proteins remain unclear.
