Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are studied for the design of advanced nanocomposite membranes, primarily due to their ultrahigh surface area, regular and highly tunable pore structures, and favorable polymer affinity. However, the development of engineered MOF-based membranes for water treatment lags behind. Here, thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes containing poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) modified ZIF-8 (mZIF) in a polyamide (PA) layer were constructed via a facile interfacial polymerization (IP) method. The modified hydrophilic mZIF nanoparticles were evenly dispersed into an aqueous solution comprising piperazine (PIP) monomers, followed by polymerizing with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to form a composite PA film. FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS analyses confirm the presence of mZIF nanoparticles on the top layer of the membranes. SEM and AFM images evince a retiform morphology of the TFN-mZIF membrane surface, which is intimately linked to the hydrophilicity and adsorption capacity of mZIF nanoparticles. Furthermore, the effect of different ZIF-8 loadings on the overall membrane performance was studied. Introducing the hydrophilizing mZIF nanoparticles not only furnishes the PA layer with a better surface hydrophilicity and more negative charge but also more than doubles the original water permeability, while maintaining a high retention of NaSO. The ultrahigh retentions of reactive dyes (e.g., reactive black 5 and reactive blue 2, >99.0%) for mZIF-functionalized PA membranes ensure their superior nanofiltration performance. This facile, cost-effective strategy will provide a useful guideline to integrate with other modified hydrophilic MOFs to design nanofiltration for water treatment.

Porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be suitable materials for immobilizing enzymes to improve their stability. However, conventional MOFs reduce the enzymes' catalytic activity due to difficulties with mass transfer and diffusing reactants after their micropores are occupied by enzyme molecules. To address these issues, a novel hierarchically structured zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (HZIF-8) was prepared to study the effects of different laccase immobilization approaches such as the post-synthesis (LAC@HZIF-8-P) and (LAC@HZIF-8-D) immobilization of catalytic activities for removing 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP).

Interactions of enzymes with supports significantly affect the activity and stability of immobilized enzymes. Herein, amino-functionalized ionic liquid (IL)-grafted magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (MZIF-90) was prepared and used to immobilize porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL). The nanocomposites were fully characterized; meanwhile, the interactions between ILs and ZIF-90 were calculated based on density functional theory.

In the present study, a magnetic mimic multi-enzyme system was developed by encapsulating the aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) herbicide hydrolase QpeH and alcohol oxidase (AOx) in zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanocrystals with magnetic FeO nanoparticles (MNPs) to detect AOPP herbicides. The structural, protein loading capacity and loading ratio, porosity, and magnetic properties of QpeH/AOx@mZIF-8 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption, and vibrating sample magnetometry. An AOPP herbicide colorimetric biosensor made with QpeH/AOx@mZIF-8 had the highest sensitivity toward quizalofop-P-ethyl (QpE) with a limit of detection of 8.

The ionic liquid (IL) was introduced to the synthesis system of magnetic zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (M/ZIF-8), which was benefit to the formation of binary imidazole and the co-modification of M/ZIF-8. The morphology and textural properties of ILM/ZIF-8 were characterized by SEM, TEM, BET and BJH. The crystal structural shape and size of MZIF-8 was unvaried with the interventional of IL.

In this study, a simple one-step method was introduced to prepare suitable PCL wound dressing by using a small amount of hydrophilic surface modifying macromolecule (LSMM) with ends capped with Polyethylene glycol and aminated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (MZIF-8) as a drug carrier for curcumin to accelerate the healing process while improve drug loading and controlled drug release. First, LSMM was synthesized and its chemical structure and average molecular weight were characterized by FTIR and gel permeation chromatography. Afterward, PCL nanofibers containing LSMM and curcumin loaded MZIF-8 were prepared and characterized.
