Intrinsic optical imaging as developed by Grinvald et al. is a powerful technique for monitoring neural function in the central nervous system. The advent of this dye-free imaging has also enabled us to monitor human brain function during neurosurgical operations. We briefly describe our own experience in functional mapping of the human somatosensory cortex, carried out using intraoperative optical imaging. The maps obtained demonstrate new additional evidence of a hierarchy for sensory response patterns in the human primary somatosensory cortex.

Purpose: We aimed to analyze retinal neurovascular unit (RNVU) alterations and function via optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and full-field electroretinography (ERG) in patients with ischemic stroke (IS).
Methods: OCTA was used to measure RNVU changes in 229 participants (101 with IS and 128 healthy controls). The RETeval device was used to record full-field electroretinograms (FERGs) in 40 participants (14 with IS and 26 healthy controls).

Compared to cultured 2D cell monolayers, 3D multicellular spheroids are more realistic tumor models. Nonetheless, spheroids remain under-utilized in preclinical research, in part, because there is a lack of fluorescence sensors that can noninvasively interrogate all the individual cells within a spheroid. This present study describes a deep-red fluorogenic molecular probe for microscopic imaging of cells that contain a high level of nitroreductase enzyme activity as a biomarker of cell hypoxia.

This study evaluated the optomechanical and structural properties of individual macroscopic layers in swine skin tissues treated with a nontoxic optical clearing agent. The clearing agent was prepared by dissolving 2,2'-thiodiethanol in a phosphate-buffered solution and applied for up to 6 days. Prolonged clearing increased both the total and unscattered transmittance.
