In this article, we numerically resolve the flow profiles of tastant concentration in the pipe of a gustometer used to deliver alternative pulses in concentration, which is a typical case of Taylor dispersion. Using this model, we can define the cases where the experimenter will deliver to the assessors a concentration profile which is significantly different from that intended. This can be simply assessed a priori using a scaling argument which involves calculating a dimensionless frequency. This is a function of the pulses frequency, the dimensions of the pipe and the flow rate used. We show that unless this parameter is taken into account, modifying the pulse frequency will modify the pulse amplitude. This design criterion is absent from the literature but we suggest this is important for designing such experiments.

Among non-coding RNAs, microRNAs are pivotal post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression in higher eukaryotes. Through a titration-based mechanism of interaction with their target RNAs, microRNAs can mediate a weak but pervasive form of RNA cross-regulation, as different endogenous RNAs can be effectively coupled by competing for microRNA binding (a phenomenon now known as "crosstalk"). Mathematical modeling has been proven of great help in unraveling many features of these competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) interactions.

Applications of causal techniques to neural time series have increased extensively over last decades, including a wide and diverse family of methods focusing on electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis. Besides connectivity inferred in defined frequency bands, there is a growing interest in the analysis of cross-frequency interactions, in particular phase and amplitude coupling and directionality. Some studies show contradicting results of coupling directionality from high frequency to low frequency signal components, in spite of generally considered modulation of a high-frequency amplitude by a low-frequency phase.

We offer three advances to the perceptual crossing simulation studies, which are aimed at challenging methodological individualism in the analysis of social cognition. First, we evolve and systematically test agents in rigorous conditions, identifying a set of 26 "robust circuits" with consistently high and generalizing performance. Next, we transform the sensor from discrete to continuous, facilitating a bifurcation analysis of the dynamics that shows that nonequilibrium dynamics are key to the mutual maintenance of interaction.
