Introduction: The Caregivers' Priorities and Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILD) is a questionnaire that measures the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Though measuring HRQL is challenging in these children, it is a valuable help for medical decision-making. There is no questionnaire to assess HRQL in French-speaking children with severe CP.

Following pre-natal diagnosis of congenital heart defect parents and family face a dramatic psychological crisis because of their state of shock, contradictory information available on potential outcomes, limited availability of time for decisions and for autonomous choices. Counselling the parents can present additional difficulties due to influence of education, cultural and religious background, individual cognitive and emotional processes, and cross-cultural patient care is a challenging issue for the caregivers. Type and quality of messages transmitted by the caregivers determine the counselling process, with the risk of misunderstandings particularly high with reduced available evidence, or with different outcomes accordingly with the various alternatives of treatment.

The authors conducted this study to assess, from a student body's perspective, the climate at one medical school with respect to diversity, inclusiveness and cross-cultural understanding.
Methods: In 2008 students in the doctor of medicine (MD), physical therapy (PT) and physician assistant programs at a public medical school were asked to complete a diversity climate survey consisting of 24 Likert-scale, short-answer and open-ended questions.
