Published: October 1989

The issue of teenage pregnancy is one of paramount concern and has been covered extensively in the professional literature. Teenage prostitution, as well, has drawn attention from medical and social science researchers. An increasing number of teenage prostitutes are becoming pregnant and delivering infants. These young women constitute a high-risk group that merits professional investigation and requires sensitive clinical approaches. We describe the pregnancy and early postpartum outcomes of 61 teenage prostitutes (age range, 13 to 18 years) in Seattle, Wash, during the period from January 1987 to February 1988. The subjects' environment, prenatal care, drug use, contraceptive practices, repeated pregnancies, and risk for sexually transmitted diseases (including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) are discussed. Two case examples are used for illustration.

Linking childhood allostatic load, early adversity and the emergence of mental health symptoms in early adulthood: Analysis of the ALSPAC longitudinal birth cohort.

Psychoneuroendocrinology

December 2024

Laboratory of Psychiatric Neuroscience, Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland, Australia; College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University, Queensland, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: It has been well-established that the allostatic load (AL) index, a cumulative score of multi-system dysregulation in response to chronic stress, is significantly increased at the time of a psychiatric diagnosis. However, no studies have investigated if there is an association between the AL index in childhood and the later development of mental health symptoms in young adults.

Methods: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a population cohort from Bristol, United Kingdom, we investigated the AL index at age 9 years and the risks for mental health symptoms at age 24 years.

Background: Personality traits, namely higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness, are predictive of dementia, although the complex relationship has yet to be fully explained. With >60 years of prospectively collected data, the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) provides a unique opportunity to thoroughly evaluate this association in a population-based randomly selected cohort. Using a gold-standard diagnostic approach to characterize dementia prevalence, we leverage life course WLS data to examine the association between mid-life personality traits and late-life dementia risk.

In this study, we compared ABO blood groups with five major groups of mental disorders to attain a higher level of specificity. The analyses were conducted using data from the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study (N=5111).
