As the result of recent progress in technology of communication robot, robots are becoming an important social partner for humans. Behavioral synchrony is understood as an important factor in establishing good human-robot relationships. In this study, we hypothesized that biasing a human's attitude toward a robot changes the degree of synchrony between human and robot. We first examined whether eyeblinks were synchronized between a human and an android in face-to-face interaction and found that human listeners' eyeblinks were entrained to android speakers' eyeblinks. This eyeblink synchrony disappeared when the android speaker spoke while looking away from the human listeners but was enhanced when the human participants listened to the speaking android while touching the android's hand. These results suggest that eyeblink synchrony reflects a qualitative state in human-robot interactions.

Purpose: Currently, no solution exists to restore natural eyelid kinematics for patients with complete eyelid paralysis due to loss of function of both the levator palpebrae superioris and orbicularis oculi. These rare cases are prone to complications of chronic exposure keratopathy which may lead to corneal blindness. We hypothesized that magnetic force could be used to fully automate eyelid movement in these cases through the use of eyelid-attached magnets and a spectacle-mounted magnet driven by a programmable motor (motorized magnetic levator prosthesis [MMLP]).

We report an experiment to investigate the role of the cerebellum and cerebrum in motor learning of timed movements. Eleven healthy human subjects were recruited to perform two experiments, the first was a classical eye-blink conditioning procedure with an auditory tone as conditional stimulus (CS) and vestibular unconditional stimulus (US) in the form of a double head-tap. In the second experiment, subjects were asked to blink voluntarily in synchrony with the double head-tap US preceded by a CS, a form of Ivanov-Smolensky conditioning in which a command or instruction is associated with the US.

In isotropic environments, an Escherichia coli cell exhibits coordinated rotational switching of its flagellar motors, produced by fluctuations in the intracellular concentration of phosphorylated CheY (CheY-P) emanating from chemoreceptor signaling arrays. In this study, we show that these CheY-P fluctuations arise through modifications of chemoreceptors by two sensory adaptation enzymes: the methyltransferase CheR and the methylesterase CheB. A cell containing CheR, CheB, and the serine chemoreceptor Tsr exhibited motor synchrony, whereas a cell lacking CheR and CheB or containing enzymatically inactive forms did not.

This paper studies the synchronization of a network with linear diffusive coupling, which blinks between the variables periodically. The synchronization of the blinking network in the case of sufficiently fast blinking is analyzed by showing that the stability of the synchronous solution depends only on the averaged coupling and not on the instantaneous coupling. To illustrate the effect of the blinking period on the network synchronization, the Hindmarsh-Rose model is used as the dynamics of nodes.
