Microbes often live in dense communities called biofilms, where competition between strains and species is fundamental to both evolution and community function. Although biofilms are commonly found in soil-like porous environments, the study of microbial interactions has largely focused on biofilms growing on flat, planar surfaces. Here, we use microfluidic experiments, mechanistic models, and game theory to study how porous media hydrodynamics can mediate competition between bacterial genotypes. Our experiments reveal a fundamental challenge faced by microbial strains that live in porous environments: cells that rapidly form biofilms tend to block their access to fluid flow and redirect resources to competitors. To understand how these dynamics influence the evolution of bacterial growth rates, we couple a model of flow-biofilm interaction with a game theory analysis. This investigation revealed that hydrodynamic interactions between competing genotypes give rise to an evolutionarily stable growth rate that stands in stark contrast with that observed in typical laboratory experiments: cells within a biofilm can outcompete other genotypes by growing more slowly. Our work reveals that hydrodynamics can profoundly affect how bacteria compete and evolve in porous environments, the habitat where most bacteria live.

The rational use of solar energy to achieve photothermal conversion is an attractive strategy to promote the efficient removal of radioactive Cs and Sr from nuclear wastewater. Herein, a photothermal adsorbent of composite aerogel with three-dimensional porous structure is fabricated by integrating prussian blue analogues (PBAs) and straw biochar into the chitosan (CS) and waste leather scrap hydrolysate (WLSH) aerogel matrix (CS/WLSH/C/PBAs). The local heating effect generated by CS/WLSH/C/PBAs aerogel induce to generate steam, accelerating the enrichment of Cs and Sr in the solution, which increase their interaction with the CS/WLSH/C/PBAs and improves their adsorption rates and capacities.

Contamination of heavy metals (HMs) has caused increasing concern due to their ecological toxicities and difficulties in degradation. The transport, retention, and release of HMs in porous media are highly related to their environmental fate and risk to groundwater. Column transport experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the retention and release behaviors of Cu, Pb, Cd, and Zn in the presence and absence of kaolin under varying ionic strengths and cation types.

Confinement of metal species in porous supports is an effective strategy to optimize hydrogenation performance ascribing to tunable nanopore environments. However, only focusing on the electronic structure modulation for metal species has limited the design of improved catalysts. Herein, spatial confinement strategy is reported for constructing ultrasmall metal clusters in nitro-bonded COF (M@TpPa-NO, M = Pd, Pt, Ru, Rh, Ir).

In this study, the mixture of zinc acetate dehydrates and boric acid was pyrolyzed in zeolite X to prepare novel B/ZnO/zeolite nanocomposites for the enhanced removal of tartrazine (TA) in aqueous environment. The composites are porous material with a relatively large pore size (35.3 nm).

The efficient removal of 99TcO4- from alkaline nuclear waste is vital for optimizing nuclear waste management and safeguarding the environment. However, current state-of-the-art sorbent materials are constrained by their inability to simultaneously achieve high alkali resistance, rapid adsorption kinetics, large adsorption capacity, and selectivity. In this study, we synthesized a urea-rich cationic porous organic polymer, IPM-403, which demonstrates exceptional chemical stability, ultrafast kinetics (~92% removal within 30 seconds), high adsorption capacity (664 mg/g), excellent selectivity, along with multiple-cycle recyclability (up to 7 cycles), making it highly promising for the removal of ReO4- (surrogate of 99TcO4-) from nuclear wastewater.
