Though a life-saving modality in neonatal intensive care units, nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) carries a small risk of irreversible ischemia and necrosis of the columella due to the configuration of the pressure delivery system. Iatrogenic injuries to the columella after nCPAP use result in a spectrum of disfigurement and functional airway obstruction. The authors performed a retrospective review of patients evaluated for nCPAP-related columellar deformities by the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the authors' institution over a 10-year period to assess reconstructive outcomes. Of 7 patients evaluated, 3 underwent reconstruction using a combination of cartilaginous framework reshaping and local tissue flaps. After a mean follow-up period of 78 months, patients had satisfactory aesthetic and functional results. Based on the authors' observations, columellar necrosis secondary to nCPAP can be divided into 3 categories: Type A demonstrates mild notching of the columella; Type B has an absent columella without notable nasal tip depression; Type C has an absent columella with nasal tip depression, with or without external nasal valve obstruction. Reconstructive needs should be individually tailored based on the degree of nasal tip depression, cartilaginous support, and soft tissue availability.

Background: In addition to nasal symptoms, allergic rhinitis (AR) has increasingly been reported to be associated with depression-like behaviors. Recent evidence suggests that neuroinflammation in the hypothalamus may cause these depressive symptoms in AR. However, the precise mechanisms and effective treatments remain to be elucidated.

We hypothesized that bighorn sheep ewes with chronic nasal carriage are the source of infection that results in fatal lamb pneumonia. We tested this hypothesis in captive bighorn ewes at two study facilities over a 5-year period, by identifying carrier ewes and then comparing lamb fates in groups that did (exposed pens) or did not (non-exposed pens) include one or more carrier ewes. Most (23 of 30) lambs born in exposed pens, but none of 11 lambs born in non-exposed pens, contracted fatal pneumonia.

By addressing patients' physical, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental comfort needs holistically, Kolcaba's Comfort Theory raises the standard of care and increases patient satisfaction. This study explored the combined application of these nursing models during the perioperative period for patients undergoing nasal deformity correction surgery. 92 patients undergoing nasal deformity correction at the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were randomly divided into two groups: the conventional group (46 patients), which received standard perioperative nursing care, and the experimental group (46 patients), which received concept map thinking nursing combined with Kolcaba's comfort nursing intervention during the perioperative period.

We aimed to analyze the influencing factors for residual symptoms following canalith repositioning maneuvers in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). A total of 193 patients with BPPV who attended our hospital from July 2019 to December 2023 and were followed up in the outpatient clinic for 4 weeks after treatment were selected. The presence or absence of residual symptoms 4 weeks after repositioning was recorded, based on which the patients were assigned into a presence group (n = 72) and an absence group (n = 121).

Introduction: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is related to disproportionate unemployment and productivity burden in the USA. The current study describes real-world mental health (MH)-related disability days and costs of patients with TRD initiated on esketamine nasal spray or conventional therapies in the USA.
Methods: Adults with TRD were selected from Merative™ MarketScan Commercial database (from January 2016 to January 2023) and classified into four cohorts (esketamine, ECT [electroconvulsive therapy], TMS [transcranial magnetic stimulation], and SGA [second-generation antipsychotics] augmentation) based on therapy initiated (index date) on/after 5 March 2019 (esketamine approval date for TRD).
