By means of whole mount NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry the distribution pattern of primary sensory cells (PSC) and the pathway of their central processes in the ventral nerve cord (VNC) ganglia were investigated in the lumbricid earthworms, Eisenia fetida and Lumbricus terrestris. The distribution pattern of the stained structures seemed to be the same in both species investigated. Strong labelling occurred in sensory fibre branches of segmental nerves and in each of the sensory longitudinal axon bundles of VNC ganglia. Based on their anatomical location some NADPH-d positive central sensory cells were identified from among which the putative tactile receptors were characterized by constant, strong staining.

: A large amount of recent evidence suggests that cellular inability to consume oxygen could play a notable part in promoting sepsis as a consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. The latter could, in fact, represent a fundamental stage in the evolution of the "natural history" of sepsis. Following a study previously conducted by the same working group on heart samples, the present research project aims to evaluate, through an immunohistochemical study, the existence and/or extent of oxidative stress in the brains of subjects who died due to sepsis and define, after reviewing the literature, its contribution to the septic process to support the use of medications aimed at correcting redox anomalies in the management of septic patients.

Phosphodiesterase 2 A (PDE2A) function is stimulated by cGMP to catabolize cAMP. However, neurological and neurochemical effects of PDE2A deficiency are poorly understood. To address this gap, we studied behavioral characteristics and cerebral morpho-chemical changes of adult male heterozygous C57BL/6-PDE2A+/- (HET), and wild type C57BL/6-PDE2A+/+ (WT) mice.

Somatostatin (SST) is a peptide expressed in the peripheral and central nervous systems, as well as in endocrine and immune cells. The aim of the current study is to determine the percentage of SST immunoreactive (IR) neurons and their colocalization with choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the myenteric plexus (MP) and submucous plexus (SP) of the small intestine (SI) and large intestine (LI) of rats across different age groups from newborn to senescence using immunohistochemistry. In the MP of the SI and LI, the percentage of SST-IR neurons significantly increased during early postnatal development from 12 ± 2.
