In this study, poly (1,8-octanediol citrate) (POC) was used to modify polyethersulfone (PES)-based membrane to enhance its hemocompatibility. Different compositions of POC (0-3%) were added into the polyethersulfone (PES) dope solutions and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as pore forming agent. The hemocompatible POC modified PES membranes were fabricated through phase-inversion technique. The prepared membranes were characterized using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic-force microscopy (AFM), contact angle, Zeta-potential, membrane porosity and pore size and pure water flux (PWF) and BSA rejection. The hemocompatibility of the modified PES membranes was evaluated by human serum fibrinogen (FBG) protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin-antithrombin III (TAT), complement (C3a and C5a) activation and Ca absorption on membrane. Results showed that by increasing POC concentration, FBG adsorption was reduced, less platelets adhesion, prolonged APTT and PT, lower TAT, C5a and C3a activation and absorb more Ca ion. These results indicated that modification of PES with POC has rendered improved hemocompatibility properties for potential application in the field of blood purification, especially in hemodialysis. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dialysis patients face multidimensional challenges that affect their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dialysis duration and various physical, cognitive, and psychosocial parameters, including fatigue, pain, sexual satisfaction, bowel control, vision, cognitive deficits, mental health, social support, quality of life, and life satisfaction, while incorporating sociodemographic data for greater context. A cross-sectional study was conducted using validated instruments such as the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), Pain Effect Scale (PES), Sexual Satisfaction Scale (SSS), Bowel Control Scale (BWCS), Impact of Visual Impairment Scale (IVIS), Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ), Mental Health Inventory (MHI), Modified Social Support Survey (MSSS), WHOQOL-BREF, and Cantril Ladder.

Traditional decision-making models conceptualize humans as adaptive learners utilizing the differences between expected and actual rewards (prediction errors, PEs) to maximize outcomes, but rarely consider the influence of violations of emotional expectations (emotional PEs) and how it differs from reward PEs. Here, we conducted a fMRI experiment (n = 43) using a modified Ultimatum Game to examine how reward and emotional PEs affect punishment decisions in terms of rejecting unfair offers. Our results revealed that reward relative to emotional PEs exerted a stronger prediction to punishment decisions.

Background: Anatomically formed healing abutments were suggested in literature to address many of the issues associated with immediate posterior implant insertion such as large extraction sockets that are extremely hard to seal without reflecting the mucoperiosteal flap, extraction sockets anatomy that are not suitable for regular healing abutment placement, and potentially high occlusal stresses when planning a temporary implant supported prothesis to improve the conditioning of supra implant tissue architecture and the emergence profile of the implant supported restorations.

Purpose: To clinically evaluate the peri-implant soft tissue profile of single posterior implant retained restorations and to assess patient related outcomes of the implant restorations that were conditioned immediately by CAD-CAM socket sealing abutments (SSA) versus those conditioned by Titanium (Ti) standard healing abutments (SHA).

Methods: Twenty participants received twenty-two single maxillary immediate implants after flapless minimally invasive tooth extraction and 3D guided implant placement in the posterior area (premolar and molar) and allocated randomly into two groups (n = 11), the intervention group: patients received PEEK SSA and the control group: the patients received Ti SHA.

Hierarchical structures of surface-accessible plasmonic gold and silver nanoparticles for SERS detection.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical technique with excellent molecular specificity. However, separate pristine nanoparticles produce relatively weak Raman signals. It is necessary to focus on increasing the "hot-spot" density generated at the nanogaps between the adjacent nanoparticles (second-generation SERS hotspot), thus significantly boosting the Raman signal by creating an electromagnetic field.

Large bone defects are a major clinical challenge in bone reconstructive surgery. 3D printing is a powerful technology that enables the manufacture of custom tissue-engineered scaffolds for bone regeneration. Electrical stimulation (ES) is a treatment method for external bone defects that compensates for damaged internal electrical signals and stimulates cell proliferation and differentiation.
