Article Abstract

It is suggested that oncocytoid changes in glandular tissue represent a continuum in the development from metaplasia via increasing hyperplasia to neoplasia. This theory, which is supported in the literature, is based on three of the authors' own cases of oncocytoid changes in the larynx. The significance of differentiating between hyperplasia and neoplasia is emphasized as the neoplastic changes such as the oncocytoid papillary cystadenoma should be extirpated radically in order to avoid recurrence.

Unusual Faces of Bladder Cancer.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2020

Department of Pathology, Biocruces-Bizkaia Health Research Institute, Cruces University Hospital, Barakaldo, 48903 Bizkaia, Spain.

The overwhelming majority of bladder cancers are transitional cell carcinomas. Albeit mostly monotonous, carcinomas in the bladder may occasionally display a broad spectrum of histological features that should be recognized by pathologists because some of them represent a diagnostic problem and/or lead prognostic implications. Sometimes these features are focal in the context of conventional transitional cell carcinomas, but some others are generalized across the tumor making its recognition a challenge.

Primary cutaneous signet-ring cell melanoma with pseudoglandular features, spindle cells and oncocytoid changes.

Am J Dermatopathol

February 2009

Sikl's Department of Pathology, Medical Faculty Hospital, Charles University, Bioptical Laboratory, Pilsen, Czech Republic.

The authors report a 69-year-old man with a primary nodular malignant melanoma on the shoulder showing unusual histological features. It mostly consisted of markedly neoplastic melanocytes, which exhibited abundant clear cytoplasm compressing the nuclei to the periphery, resulting in a signet-ring appearance. In other areas of the melanoma, there were focally desmoplastic and pseudoglandular patterns and oncocytoid changes.

Oncocytic and oncocytoid tumors of the salivary glands.

Semin Diagn Pathol

May 1999

Department of Pathology, University of Michigan Hospitals, Ann Arbor, USA.

Primary pink cell tumors of the salivary glands constitute a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant lesions characterized by tumor cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. These tumors are composed predominantly of oncocytic, epidermoid, or myoepithelial cells. Tumors with a significant oncocytic component include Warthin's tumor, oncocytoma, and oncocytic carcinoma.
