At the beginning of the 21st century, use of large-diameter, metal-on-metal devices was a popular procedure for hip replacement in young and physically active patients; however, within a few years, the number of revisions increased, resulting in a worldwide recall for the articular surface replacement (ASR) system. Complication rates for the ASR devices implanted at the authors' department are reported, with revision rates of 32% and 30% in the ASR XL Head and ASR Resurfacing groups, respectively. Reasons for revision surgery were serum metal ion elevation, luxation or subluxation, aseptic loosening, soft tissue compromise (adverse reactions to metal debris [ARMD]), and infection. The calculated implant survival for the ASR XL Head system and the ASR Resurfacing device (DePuy Orthopaedics Inc, Warsaw, Indiana) in the current series was 79% and 90%, respectively, at 60 months. Symptomatic patients with metal-on-metal devices, with or without elevated metal ion concentrations, should undergo cross sectional imaging to exclude ARMD. In cases of increased metal ion concentrations, local pain, or ARMD, revision surgery has to be evaluated. In the future, closer monitoring of new implants is needed to prevent high failure rates, as seen with the ASR design. Furthermore, the withdrawal of the device highlights the importance of national implant registries. [Orthopedics. 2017; 40(2):e340-e347.].

Introduction: Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder causing significant disability worldwide. Despite extensive research on specific populations, comprehensive analyses of global trends are remains limited.

Methods: We extracted incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) data for migraine from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 database.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how socioeconomic factors influence the acceptance of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines during the pandemic, highlighting the need for tailored public health strategies.
  • An analysis of nearly 508,000 participants from the Korean Community Health Survey found that individuals with higher education and income levels were more likely to accept the COVID-19 vaccine compared to the influenza vaccine prior to the pandemic.
  • Results indicated that older adults showed hesitancy towards influenza vaccination due to poorer health status, suggesting that vaccination strategies should target social engagement to improve uptake.

Purpose: The etiology and pathophysiology of vaccine-associated chronic urticaria (CU) remain unclear, particularly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Thus, this study aimed to comprehensively investigate the global burden and long-term trends of vaccine-associated CU, with a focus on the associated vaccines and the distribution of cases across different age groups and sexes.

Methods: Using data from the World Health Organization international pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase), which encompasses reports from 156 countries and territories between 1968 and 2023, we systematically analyzed the global burden and long-term trends in vaccine-associated CU reports (total individual case safety reports = 131,255,418).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between maternal fasting blood sugar (FBS), body mass index (BMI), and age as predictors for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women, using data from 4007 Iranian women.
  • - Results show that FBS has a strong correlation with GDM, particularly when considering a cut-off point of 85.95 mg/dL, which produced a sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 71%.
  • - The findings emphasize the importance of maternal weight and BMI in predicting GDM and highlight the need for further research to better standardize FBS cut-off points while accounting for age and BMI.

Objective: Data on the global prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is significantly varied and limited across countries and over time. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the global, regional, and national burden of CRS from the years 1980 to 2021, as well as identify those factors that influence levels of such burden.

Design: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of general population-based observational studies focusing on CRS.
