In this study, for the first time, the edible pectin film was reinforced by crystalline nanocelullose (CNC). The incorporation of three levels of CNC (2, 5 and 7% w/w) on mechanical, thermal and water vapor barrier properties of pectin-based biodegradable film were investigated using solution casting evaporation method for film preparation. The optimum result was obtained through the nanocomposite film with 5% CNC in terms of mechanical and water vapor properties as the tensile strength increased up to 84% and water vapor permeability decreased by 40%. However, analysis of thermal properties indicated no significant effect of CNC on glass transition temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies illustrated a positive correlation between the degree of crystallinity and the CNC level. Moreover, AFM images presented good dispersion of CNC in the pectin matrix suggesting appropriate interaction between the filler and matrix, which is in agreement with mechanical consequences. According to the overall results, the reinforcement of pectin film with 5% CNC compared to other strengthening strategies had a higher effect and therefore it could be introduced as a good candidate for the development of strong, completely biodegradable and renewable food packaging material.

Previous studies have confirmed that burns and scalds can lead to metabolic disorders in the liver. However, the effects of severe burns at various time points on liver lipid metabolism disorders, as well as the relationship between these disorders and liver function, metabolism, and infection, have not yet been investigated. This study established a SD rat scald model, macroscopic observation of weight changes, histological staining, Western blot detection of fat browning and metabolic indicators, reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of the expression of liver new fat generation genes, determination of liver function and inflammatory indicators.

Unidirectional moisture-conducting fabrics were prepared by electrospraying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) onto three green fabric substrates, namely cotton, hemp, and modal. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of coating thickness, coating material, and substrate material on the moisture conductivity of the fabrics. The electrospraying technique was effective in forming uniform and strongly adhered PVDF and PVC coatings on the fabric substrates, and the coating thickness and material type had a significant effect on the fabric's moisture conductivity.

Combustion of biomass and waste results in release of corrosive species, such as alkali chlorides and water vapor, which accelerate the corrosion of superheaters in the boiler. To improve our understanding of alkali-induced corrosion, long-term corrosion investigations are needed. This study utilizes a systematic approach based on long-term corrosion studies (up to 8000 h) in a well-controlled laboratory environment to understand the corrosion behavior and protectiveness of oxide scales formed on a FeCr alloy (marginal chromia former) and three overlay weld coating systems (lean FeCrAl, FeCrAl, and Ni-based alloy) in a KCl-rich environment at 600 °C.

Background: The use of laryngeal masks (LM) has increased widely today, both in anesthesia and in emergency cases. LM are available as reusable and disposable. Although reuse of disposable LM is not recommended, they are reused again after decontamination with different methods in anesthesia units in some countries.

The mechanisms of NO reduction by CO over nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene)-supported single-atom Ni catalysts in the presence of O, HO, CO, and SO have been studied via density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The catalyst is represented by a single Ni atom bonded to four N atoms on N-graphene. Several alternative reaction pathways, including adsorption of NO on the Ni site, direct reduction of NO by CO, decomposition of NO to NO followed by reduction of NO to N, formation of active oxygen radical O*, and reduction of O* by CO, were hypothesized and the energy barrier corresponding to each of the reaction steps was calculated using DFT.
