We have examined in mice the effects of mixed ligand treatments with desferrioxamine B (DFOA), Na3Ca-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), and DL-penicillamine (PA) on the retention of a mixture of 95Nb and 144Ce. The results show that 95Nb + 144Ce could be mobilized effectively by simultaneous application of specific agents (i.e., DFOA, DTPA) with no decrease in their efficiencies.

The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine on April 26, 1986 led to a considerable release of radioactive material resulting in environmental contamination over vast areas of Belarus, Ukraine and western Russian Federation. The major health effect of the Chernobyl accident was an increase in thyroid cancer incidence in people exposed as children and adolescents, so much attention was paid to the thyroid doses resulting from intakes of I. Because cow's milk consumption was the main source of I intake by people, it was important to measure the I activity concentrations in cow's milk to calculate, or to validate, the thyroid doses to the exposed population.

Based on the analysis of multi-year monitoring data on atmospheric air contamination in the vicinity of Lake Karachay, Reservoir V-9, a model is suggested here for carry-over of radionuclides (trace elements) in the form of water aerosols from the reservoir surface area. The concept of fractionation (accumulation) coefficients is introduced for different radionuclides present in V-9 Reservoir water aerosols as compared to the reference radionuclide Cs. The range of possible fractionation coefficient values is estimated for Cs, Sr, Ru, Zr+ Nb, Sb, Ce and Pu radionuclides.

Waterborne radioactive releases into the Techa River from the Mayak Production Association in Russia during 1949-1956 resulted in downstream contamination of the river ecosystem. The discharged liquid waste contained both short-lived isotopes (Zr, Nb, Ru, Ce, Y, Sr and Ba with half-life from 3 days to 1.02 years) and the long-lived Sr and Cs (half-life - 28.

Hexavalent Np, Pu, and Am individually, and as a group, have all been cocrystallized with UO2(NO3)2·6H2O, constituting the first demonstration of an An(VI) group cocrystallization. The hexavalent dioxo cations of Np, Pu, and Am cocrystallize with UO2(NO3)2·6H2O in near proportion with a simple reduction in temperature, while the lower valence states, An(III) and An(IV), are only slightly removed from solution. A separation of An(VI) species from An(III) ions by crystallization has been demonstrated, with an observed separation factor of 14.

Following the Fukushima accident, a series of aerosol samples were taken between 24th March and 13th April 2011 by cascade impactors in the Czech Republic to obtain the size distribution of (131)I, (134)Cs, (137)Cs, and (7)Be aerosols. All distributions could be considered monomodal. The arithmetic means of the activity median aerodynamic diameters (AMADs) for artificial radionuclides and for (7)Be were 0.
