Creating perfect direct composite restorations has been for long time a strict challenge due to many materials' limitations impacting either shade integration or surface quality, and possibly colour stability. Next to technological drawbacks, a certain complexity and lack of predictability in clinical application was inherent to the technique and made it elitist for a long time. Shading and layering concepts then progressively evolved from a simplistic, non histo-anatomical, bilaminar technique to a multi-layering approach (3 to 4 or more layers), following the Vita Classic system. One of the most achieved concepts is polychromatic layering which makes use of a variable number of layers (basically VITA or non-VITA opacious dentin, chromatic enamel and translucent/opalescent enamel), driven by the natural tooth optical composition. In parallel with this evolution, a simplified, non-VITA shading system was developed with a reduced number of layers (basically dentin &enamel layer, plus effect shades if required) known as the natural layering concept, aiming to the same optimal esthetic integration and natural colour reproduction/emulation. The latest improvements appear all driven by the same view of improved reliability and clinical simplification.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the marginal seal of novel bioactive restorative materials and the material-related properties associated with bacterial microleakage.
Methods: Class II cavities prepared into human extracted teeth were restored with: Venus Diamond (VD) + selective enamel etching (SEE)/self-etching universal adhesive (SEA), ACTIVA BioACTIVE RESTORATIVE (AB) + SEE/SEA, Cention Forte (CF) + Cention Primer, Ketac Universal Aplicap (KU), EQUIA Forte HT (EF) and Surefil One (SO) and exposed to a cariogenic multi-species bacterial suspension for 7 days. Bacterial microleakage was visualized with a modified gram staining protocol and bacterial penetration depths were microscopically determined after sectioning the teeth.

Objectives: This study investigated the effects of different whitening toothpaste (WT) on the surface properties and staining susceptibility of a resin composite.
Methods: Cylindrical samples were prepared with a micro-hybrid resin composite and were randomized into groups according to the toothpaste (n = 12): distilled water (DW), regular toothpaste (RT), WT with silica + pyrophosphate (WT-S/P), WT with pentaphosphate and pyrophosphate (WT-P/P), WT with hydrogen peroxide and pyrophosphate (WT-HP/P) and WT with charcoal and pyrophosphate (WT-Ch/P). The samples were brushed for 825 cycles in an automatic brushing machine, simulating 30 days of brushing.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of various cleaning protocols on the bond strength of dual-cure resin cement following temporary cementation.
Materials And Methods: Fifty-two human third molars were sectioned to expose superficial dentin and divided into four groups: (1) fresh, noncontaminated dentin (control); (2) pumice cleaning; (3) pumice + sodium bicarbonate air polishing; and (4) pumice + 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) based cleaner. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were treated with noneugenol zinc oxide temporary cement, followed by their respective cleaning protocols.

Objectives: To analyze the marginal/internal gap and the fatigue behavior of crowns made of two different materials, using four combinations of a digital workflow-two intraoral scanners (IOSs) and two milling machines.
Materials And Methods: Crowns were made considering three factors: IOS (a confocal microscopy-based scanner: TRIOS 3-TR; or a combination of active triangulation and dynamic confocal microscopy: Primescan-PS), milling machines (four-axis: CEREC MC XL-CR or five-axis: PrograMill PM7-PM), and restorative material (lithium disilicate-LD or resin composite-RC) ( = 10). The bonding surface of each crown was treated and bonded to each respective glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin die using a dual-cure resin cement.
