Background: Dance has emerged as a complementary treatment that may promote adaptive neural plasticity while improving symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD), such as balance, gait, posture, and walking. Understanding brain changes that arise from participation in dance interventions is important as these neural plastic changes play an important role in protecting and healing the brain. Although dance has been shown to improve PD motor and nonmotor symptoms, the neural mechanisms underlying these changes, specifically depression and mood, remain elusive.

Occurrence and risk factors of equine piroplasmosis in Portugal: A five-year retrospective study.

Vet Parasitol

December 2024

CIISA - Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon, Portugal; Associate Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Sciences (AL4AnimalS), Portugal; Elvas School of Biosciences, Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, Portugal; VALORIZA - Research Centre for Endogenous Resources Valorisation, Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, Portugal.

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a tick-borne disease of equids caused by Theileria equi, Theileria haneyi, and Babesia caballi. EP is endemic in most tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, and there is a likelihood that it is also endemic in Portugal. This retrospective study aimed to determine the seroprevalence, prevalence, and potential risk factors of EP in our country over the past five years.

Objectives: Survivors of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) are at high risk of incident depression, which is modified by social determinants of health (SDOH) and associated with worse functional outcomes. We sought to determine the role of prestroke SDOH in depression incidence after ICH to better characterise post-ICH outcomes.

Study Design: We analysed data from a cohort study of ICH survivors without prestroke depression, presenting at Massachusetts General Hospital between 2006 and 2017.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most malignant forms of cancer with the lowest survival ratio. Our study aims to utilize an integrated bioinformatic analysis to identify hub genes against GBM and explore the active phytochemicals with drug-like properties in treating GBM. The study employed databases of DisGenet, GeneCards, and Gene Expression Omnibus to retrieve GBM-associated genes, revealing 142 overlapping genes.

Optimizing sequence data analysis using convolution neural network for the prediction of CNV bait positions.

BMC Bioinformatics

December 2024

Albert Szent-Györgyi Health Centre, University of Szeged, Korányi fasor 14-15, Szeged, H-6725, Csongrád-Csanád, Hungary.

Background: Accurate prediction of copy number variations (CNVs) from targeted capture next-generation sequencing (NGS) data relies on effective normalization of read coverage profiles. The normalization process is particularly challenging due to hidden systemic biases such as GC bias, which can significantly affect the sensitivity and specificity of CNV detection. In many cases, the kit manifests provide only the genome coordinates of the targeted regions, and the exact bait design of the oligo capture baits is not available.
