The studies covered 211 women employed at a Technical Articles Plant in exposure to chemical solvents, such as: methyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, xylene, toluene, n-amyl acetate. The workplaces were ventilated and the concentrations of vapours did not exceed Threshold Limit Values (TLVs). Arithmetic means did not reveal any exposure to chemicals at particular plant divisions, which was also confirmed by the indices of admissible concentrations of chemicals or their metabolites in biological fluids (ABC--admissible biological concentrations). Morphological tests of blood and enzymatic determinations in their mean values did not indicate any toxic effects. On the other hand, individual analysis of every working woman demonstrated deviations from the values of the parameters determined. The changes referred mostly to the duration of coagulation, bleeding and methanol absorption, which points to the need for prevention and protection of the working women against occupational hazards.

Context: This study investigates the reaction mechanism of luteolin with selenium dioxide in ethanol. Through a detailed search for transition states and thermodynamic energy calculations, it was found that the reaction proceeds via two possible pathways, leading to the formation of products P1 and P2, respectively. A common feature of both pathways is that the first elementary step results in the formation of the intermediate INT1.

Brazilian soils have distinctive characteristics to European and North American soils which are typically used to investigate pesticide fate. This study aimed to compare soil-water partition coefficient (K), reversibility of adsorption and degradation half-life (DT) of 5 pesticides covering a wide range of physico-chemical properties in contrasting Brazilian soils (Argissolo, Gleissolo, Latossolo and Neossolo) and a temperate (UK) alfisol soil, and to study their relationship with soil OM, clay and expandable clay content, CEC and pH. In addition, we used a novel laboratory test to evaluate sorption reversibility, the 3-Phase Assay (3PA).

Solvent-controlled silver catalyzed radical transformation of α-imino-oxy acids with cyclic aldimines.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

Lunan Institute of Intelligent Biomedical Engineering, College of Food Science and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Zaozhuang University, Zaozhuang, 277160, P. R. China.

A silver-catalyzed cross coupling of cyclic aldimines and α-imino-oxy acids has been developed. The solvent-dependent reaction could selectively deliver either cyclic imine moiety retained nitriles or ring-opened oxonitriles in moderate yields. The mechanistic studies show that the reaction undergoes a radical pathway.

Macroscopic Gold Cluster Helical Tendrils.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Henan Key Laboratory of Crystalline Molecular Functional Materials, College of Chemistry, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, P. R. China.

Handedness-controllable macroscopic helices are needed for understanding the chirality transfer through scales and design of high-performance devices. Bottom-up self-assembly rarely affords macroscopic helical superstructures because of accumulating disorder that is difficult to avoid during hierarchical self-assembly. Here, we demonstrate that tetragold clusters can assemble into macroscopic helices at the centimeter scale.

In modern agriculture, control of insect pests is achieved by using insecticides that can also have lethal and sublethal effects on beneficial non-target organisms. Here, we investigate acute toxicity and sublethal effects of four insecticides on the males' sex pheromone response and the female host finding ability of the Drosophila parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonists acetamiprid, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor, as well as the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor dimethoate were applied topically as acetone solutions.
