This study investigates the use of "real options analysis" (ROA) to quantify the value of greater product flexibility at algal biofuel production facilities. A deterministic optimization framework is integrated with a combined life cycle assessment/techno-economic analysis model and subjected to an ensemble of 30-year commodity price trajectories. Profits are maximized for two competing plant configurations: 1) one that sells lipid-extracted algae as animal feed only; and 2) one that can sell lipid-extracted algae as feed or use it to recover nutrients and energy, due to an up-front investment in anaerobic digestion/combined heat and power. Results show that added investment in plant flexibility does not result in an improvement in net present value, because current feed meal prices discourage use of lipid-extracted algae for nutrient and energy recovery. However, this study demonstrates that ROA provides many useful insights regarding plant design that cannot be captured via traditional techno-economic modeling.

Combining ABE fermentation and anaerobic digestion to treat with lipid extracted algae for enhanced bioenergy production.

As a downstream process output, biobutanol can be produced via acetone, butanol, and ethanol (ABE) fermentation from lipid-extracted algae (LEA), but the leftover residue has not been treated for additional value. In current study, LEA were acid hydrolyzed to extract glucose into the hydrolysate, which was then used for ABE fermentation to produce butanol. In the meantime, anaerobic digestion was performed on the hydrolysis residue to produce methane and release nutrients for algae recultivation.

Previous study found that the solvent extraction efficiency of lipid in microalgae could be greatly improved by washing algae cells before the second time extraction. Based on the "organic solvents-water-organic solvents" method, this research further studied the effect of four solvent systems (acetone, chloroform/methanol, chloroform/methanol/water, dichloromethane/methanol), two types of water treatment (vortex and ultrasonic), three water treatment time gradient (0 s, 30 s, 120 s) on the lipid extraction at three different microalgae growth stages (3rd day, 5th day, 9th day). The results show that the combination of water treatment type, treatment time and solvent is very important to the efficiency of lipid extraction.

Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology, Durban University of Technology, P O Box1334, Durban, 4000, South Africa.

The aquaculture industry is an efficient edible protein producer and grows faster than any other food sector. Therefore, it requires enormous amounts of fish feed. Fish feed directly affects the quality of produced fish, potential health benefits, and cost.

The industrialization of integrated algae-aquaculture systems entails appropriate information regarding environmental and economic assessments, field and laboratory analyses, and feasibility studies. Accordingly, Scenedesmus obliquus was cultivated in a raceway pond (300 m), and the algal biomass was used as a protein source for the growth of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Nile tilapia fish was cultivated in five commercial-scale tanks for 44 weeks, having a productivity of 15-20 kg (live weight)·m.

Quorum-sensing molecules (QSMs) extracted from anaerobic sludge can help to enhance the overall productivity of algal culture, thus diminishing the per unit production cost of algae based-biofuel. In this investigation, QSMs extracted from anaerobic bacterial sludge of microbial fuel cell (MFC) was used to enhance the overall productivity of Chlorella sorokiniana cultivated in a separate bubble column photobioreactor. With the dosage of QSMs, algal biomass productivity and lipid content were increased by 2.
