Inoculation of HeLa and MIO cells with a guanidine-dependent mutant of poliovirus (gd-polio) in the absence of guanidine resulted in stimulation of mouse encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus reproduction. No stimulation was found to occur in the presence of actinomycin D, on pre-treatment of the cells with cordycepin, or on their UV irradiation or enucleation. In contrast to HeLa cells, the enhancement of EMC virus reproduction by gd-polio in MIO cells required no current synthesis of cellular RNAs: it occurred in the presence of actinomycin D, upon UV irradiation of the cells or their enucleation. The possible mechanisms of the stimulating effect of poliovirus in HeLa and MIO cells are discussed.

Silicone oil, an intraocular surgical adjuvant, induces retinal ferroptosis.

Vitrectomy with silicone oil (SO) endotamponade is an effective treatment for vision-threatening retinal diseases. However, unexplained vision impairment has been reportedly critical side effects. Previously, we reported that the eyes with ocular toxoplasmosis showed retinal ferroptosis with the clinical sign of reduced intravitreal iron (Fe).

Retinal neurodegeneration (RN), an early marker of diabetic retinopathy (DR), is closely associated with Müller glia cells (MGs) in diabetic subjects. MGs play a pivotal role in maintaining retinal homeostasis, integrity, and metabolic support and respond to diabetic stress. In lower vertebrates, MGs have a strong regenerative response and can completely repair the retina after injuries.

Microcirculatory dysfunction, hypoxia, and inflammation are considered to be central in the pathogenesis of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). In this experimental study, we hypothesized that extracorporeal removal of inflammatory cytokines by hemoadsorption (HA) therapy may mitigate renal injury associated with sepsis-induced AKI. To this end, we investigated renal microcirculatory oxygenation and perfusion, oxygen consumption, lactate, systemic hemodynamic variables, tubular cell integrity, inflammatory mediators, and kidney function in a rat model of septic AKI elicited by endotoxin infusion.

Harmful Algal Blooms involving the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum continue to increase in ecosystems suffering the climate warming and anthropogenic pressure. Changes in the total proteome and physiological traits of the Mediterranean A. pacificum SG C10-3 strain were measured in response to increasing temperature (24 °C, 27 °C, 30 °C) and trace metal contamination (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd).

Osteopontin Regulates AQP4 Expression by TRPV4 Activation in Müller Cells: Implications for Retinal Homeostasis.

Mol Neurobiol

Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Departamento de Ciencias Fisiológicas, Laboratorio de Biomembranas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

During the intense neuronal activity in the retina, Müller cells are exposed to a hypotonic environment and activate a regulatory volume decrease (RVD) response, which depends on Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and the calcium channel Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4 (TRPV4). It was reported that Osteopontin (OPN), a cytokine and component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), may modulate the RVD of Müller cells. In other cell types, OPN participates in cell survival and migration, which Müller cells undergo to maintain retinal homeostasis.
