Article Abstract

We demonstrate a compact (30 μm long) broadband bilayer inverse taper edge-coupler for silicon photonics with a 1.7 dB coupling loss from a commercially available focused fiber with 5 μm mode diameter. We compare the performance of our bilayer taper with a conventional SOI inverse taper coupler and show that our bilayer coupler achieves between 1.5 dB to 2 dB improvement in the coupling efficiencies for both the TE and TM polarizations. The dimensions and fabrication steps for our bilayer taper are simple and compatible with standard foundry processes.

Efficient coupling between optical fibers and on-chip photonic waveguides has long been a crucial issue for photonic chips used in various applications. Edge couplers (ECs) based on an inverse taper have seen widespread utilization due to their intrinsic broadband operation. However, it still remains a big challenge to realize polarization-insensitive low-loss ECs working at the O-band (1,260-1,360 nm), mainly due to the strong polarization dependence of the mode coupling/conversion and the difficulty to fabricate the taper tip with an ultra-small feature size.

Once light is coupled to a photonic chip, its efficient distribution in terms of power splitting throughout silicon photonic circuits is very crucial. We present two types of 1 × 4 power splitters with different splitting ratios of 1:1:1:1 and 2:1:1:2. Various taper configurations were compared and analyzed to find the suitable configuration for the power splitter, and among them, parabolic tapers were chosen.

State-of-the-art computational methods combined with common idealized structural models provide an incomplete understanding of experimental observations on real nanostructures, since manufacturing introduces unavoidable deviations from the design. We propose to close this knowledge gap by using the real structure of a manufactured nanostructure as input in computations to obtain a realistic comparison with measurements on the same nanostructure. We demonstrate this approach on the structure of a real inverse woodpile photonic bandgap crystal made from silicon, as previously obtained by synchrotron X-ray imaging.

This paper demonstrates the benefits of leveraging free-space optics concepts in the design of certain integrated photonic components, leading to a footprint reduction without compromising on performance. Specifically, we present ultra-short, highly efficient and fabrication-friendly mode-size converters based on metamaterial Fresnel lens-assisted tapers. This is achieved using a parameterized inverse-design approach, where the metamaterial phase shifters are realized using fabrication-friendly Manhattan geometries, by optimizing the width, length, and position of the phase shifters.

Optical communication is progressing towards low power consumption and lightweight solutions, necessitating the integration of multispectral output capabilities within a single optical module. We demonstrate a SiN photonic platform-based edge coupler for a standard single mode fiber (SMF) that enables operation in both the O-band and C-band simultaneously. The device is composed of a multi-segment SiN inverse taper and SiON taper cladding with specific refractive index.
