A low level of air-borne bacteria in the operating room air can be achieved if all staff wear clothes made of low-permeability material (i.e. clean air suits). This study investigated if there was a difference in protective efficacy between two single-use scrubs made of polypropylene by testing them during routinely performed orthopaedic surgical procedures. No significant difference in the colony-forming unit count/m air was found between the two scrubs, so the choice can be based on which scrub type is more comfortable for staff.

Lung macrophage cells play a critical role in various lung diseases, and their state can change depending on the progression of the disease by inducing either an inflammatory or anti-inflammatory state. In this review, the potential therapeutic effects of treatment with antioxidant nanoparticles in air-borne diseases focusing on porcine reproductive and respiratory virus (PRRSV), considering reactive oxygen species (ROS) as one of the factors that regulate M1 and M2 macrophages in the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory states, respectively, was described. In addition, the author examines the status of protein structure research on CD163 (one of the markers of anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages) in human and veterinary lung diseases.

The members of the Working Group for surveillance of pertussis in Vallès are listed under Collaborators.
We describe a pertussis outbreak in the Vallès region of Catalonia, from September 2023 to April 2024. Incidence was high in children aged 10-14 years compared with previous outbreaks. Limited impact in newborns could be explained by the high vaccination coverage during pregnancy and at 11 months of age in 2022, at 85% and 94.
