Background: With the identification of β2-microglobulin (β2MG) as an active participant in dialysis-related amyloid fibril formation, low-molecular-weight proteins (LMWPs) are now recognized as a distinct class of uremic toxins, and numerous compounds in this category have been identified. The class of LMWPs, although not precisely defined, has a molecular weight range of approximately 1,000-50,000 Da. With this in mind, dialysis prescriptions have been modified to increase the efficiency of uremic solute removal. Many studies have characterized the dialytic removal of β2MG and it is therefore regarded as a surrogate for LMWPs.
Summary: In Japan, dialysis membranes that can efficiently remove β2MG are recommended. Recently, researchers have reported that β2MG is not only a uremic toxin that should be removed, but also a predictor of the prognosis of dialysis patients. In Japan, hemodiafiltration (HDF), especially on-line HDF, and protein-permeable hemodialysis (HD) is being actively carried out, and it is often reported that prognosis is improved by decreasing the concentrations of substances larger than β2MG. It is important, then, that dialysis prescriptions achieve effective clearance of such substances. Key Messages: Over 2,000 uremic substances have been identified that form or accumulate because of renal failure and cause various symptoms and complications. Focusing on these facts, HD or HDF therapy, which is associated with albumin loss, was implemented targeting the LMWPs. Here, we report the effects of albumin-losing blood purification (HD/HDF) for the purpose of removing LMWPs.

The recently discovered metagenomic urethanases UMG-SP1, UMG-SP2, and UMG-SP3 have emerged as promising tools to establish a bio-based recycling approach for polyurethane (PU) waste. These enzymes are capable of hydrolyzing urethane bonds in low molecular weight dicarbamates as well as in thermoplastic PU and the amide bond in polyamide employing a Ser-Ser -Lys triad for catalysis, similar to members of the amidase signature protein superfamily. Understanding the catalytic mechanism of these urethanases is crucial for enhancing their enzymatic activity and improving PU bio-recycling processes.

To elucidate the effect of transglutaminase (TG) on the rheological properties of wheat gluten, this study investigates the underlying mechanisms by analyzing changes in gluten structure. The results demonstrated that the TG-treated gluten samples had higher storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G″) compared to the control, conversely, creep and recovery strains followed an opposite trend. Notably, the most pronounced effects were observed with adding 2 U/g TG for 20-30 min.

In this study, the impact of the varying environments, wet-cool (2017), dry-hot (2018), and fluctuating (2019), on two spring wheat genotypes, Diskett and Bumble, grown in field conditions in southern Sweden was studied. From harvested grains, polymeric gluten proteins were fractionated and collected using SE-HPLC and then analyzed with LC-MS/MS. Proteins and peptides identified through searches against the protein sequences of (taxon 4565) from the UniProtKB database showed 7 high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) and 24 low molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS) with different enrichment levels for both genotypes.
