Two complementary strategies have been developed for the C- and O-allylation of phenols via a common π-allyl Pd complex. While O-allylation of phenols by this method is a well-recognized reaction of general utility, the associated para-selective C-allylation reaction is still in its infancy. Cationic π-allyl Pd intermediates, derived from allylic ester carbonates and palladium(0) catalyst, were found to undergo the Friedel-Crafts-type para-selective C-allylations with nine different phenols. Both C- and O-allylated products were obtained in good to excellent yields following a metal-catalyzed regio- and stereospecific substitutive 1,3-transposition. Conditions were also identified that control access to either allylated product. Finally, a study of the equilibrium established between the two allylation products revealed that the O-allylated compound was the kinetic product and the C-allylated compound the thermodynamic product.

Palladium-Catalyzed Cascade Allylative Dicarbofunctionalization of Aryl Phenol-Tethered Alkynes with Allyl Iodides: Synthesis of Skipped Dienes.

Inner Mongolia Key Laboratory of Fine Organic Synthesis, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Inner Mongolia University, Hohhot 010021, China.

A palladium-catalyzed cascade allylative dicarbofunctionalization of aryl phenol-tethered alkynes with allyl iodides is described. A series of polysubstituted spirocyclo-containing skipped dienes with an all-carbon tetrasubstituted alkene unit are synthesized through this convenient process. The cascade reaction proceeds selectively through dearomative C-allylation instead of O-allylation of aryl phenols.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Dynamic Kinetic Asymmetric Allylation of Phenols and 2-Hydroxypyridines.

Chemistry

Institut für Organische Chemie, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Albertstraße 21, 79104, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

Inspired by the mechanistic studies of rhodium-catalyzed atom-economic addition of carboxylate acids to allenes, a rhodium-catalyzed dynamic kinetic asymmetric allylation of different nucleophiles with racemic allylic carbonates has been developed. High regio- and enantioselectivities can be obtained under neutral conditions and, furthermore, the chemoselectivities can be controlled by different diphosphine ligands. (R,R)-QuinoxP* leads to selective O-allylation of phenols, whereas when embedding (S,S)-DIOP as the ligand, 2-naphthol is ortho-C-allylated for the first time in high enantioselectivity.

Synthesis and evaluation of 3-salicyloylpyridine derivatives as cytotoxic mitochondrial apoptosis inducers.

Bioorg Med Chem Lett

Bio-Organic and Photochemistry Laboratory, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar 143005, Punjab, India. Electronic address:

A series of novel 3-salicyloylpyridines (4a-h) were synthesized with good yield by modified Knoevenagel-Stobbel method; o-allylation with allyl bromide lead to formation of compounds (5a-h). The synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques and evaluated for cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines. Compounds bearing hydroxyl group displayed high cytotoxicity (4a-h) as compared to o-allylated molecules (5a-h).

Six new octahedral ruthenium(II) carbonyl complexes having the general molecular formula [RuCl(CO)(B)L(1-2)] (B = PPh3, AsPh3 or py; L(1-2) = quinoline based NNO ligand) were synthesized. The quinoline based ligands behave as monoanionic tridentate donor and coordinated to ruthenium via ketoenolate oxygen, azomethine nitrogen and quinoline nitrogen. The composition of the complexes has been established by elemental analysis and spectral methods (FT-IR, electronic, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, (31)P NMR and ESI-Mass).
