OCULAR FINDINGS IN A PATIENT WITH ECTODERMAL DYSPLASIA. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Purpose: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) results from abnormal development of the ectodermal layer. Although coexistence of ED and retinal pathology has been described, concomitance with retinal venous tortuosity has not been reported in the literature.

Methods: Case report.

Results: We report the case of a 23-year-old man with ED with bilateral retinal venous tortuosity, trichomegaly, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye. Although the coexistence of ED with trichomegaly and meibomian gland dysfunction has been previously reported, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of retinal venous tortuosity associated with ED.

Conclusion: Coexistence of retinal venous tortuosity and ED may be the consequence of a genetic mutation affecting cellular signaling pathways during retinal angiogenesis.

The integrity of the blood-retina barrier (BRB) is crucial for phototransduction and vision, by tightly restricting transport of molecules between the blood and surrounding neuronal cells. Breakdown of the BRB leads to the development of retinal diseases. Here, we show that Netrin-1/Unc5b and Norrin/Lrp5 signaling establish a zonated endothelial cell gene expression program that controls BRB integrity.

Diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, glaucoma, and contrast-related eye diseases are well-recognized conditions resulting from high blood pressure, rising blood glucose, and elevated eye pressure. Later-stage symptoms usually include patches of cotton wool, restricted veins in the optic nerve, and buildup of blood in the optic nerve. Severe consequences include damage of the visual nerve, and retinal artery obstruction, and possible blindness may result from these conditions.

Introduction: To investigate 5-year outcomes on intraocular pressure (IOP) and safety of micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCPC) in patients with glaucoma.

Methods: Patients with mild to advanced glaucoma who underwent a standardized micropulse TSCPC procedure at the University Eye Clinic Maastricht from November 2016 to February 2019 were included.

Results: A total of 165 eyes were included, with outcomes for 112 eyes available after 5-year follow-up.

Purpose: To investigate local hemodynamic changes resulting from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in different vasculature networks using a computational fluid dynamics model based on 3D reconstructed confocal microscopic images.

Methods: Three-dimensional rat retinal vasculature was reconstructed from confocal microscopy images using a 3D U-Net-based labeling technique, followed by manual correction. We conducted a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis on different retinal vasculature networks derived from a single rat.

Genetic and pharmacological targeting of mTORC1 in mouse models of arteriovenous malformation expose non-cell autonomous signalling in HHT.

Angiogenesis

December 2024

Division of Vascular Biology, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, 171 77, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal connections between arteries and veins that negatively affect the cardiovascular system and can be caused by mutations in the endoglin gene, leading to the disease HHT1.
  • Research indicates that mTORC1 signaling is activated in the retinal vasculature of HHT mouse models and is influenced by the loss of endoglin, showing a complex interaction with AVM biology.
  • While inhibiting mTORC1 in endothelial cells only slightly reduced AVM severity, increasing its activity surprisingly led to less severe AVMs, suggesting a need for balanced mTORC1 signaling; total inhibition with rapamycin was the most effective treatment, raising questions about other pathways involved.
