A novel application of phase-space warping (PSW) method to detect fatigue in the musculoskeletal system is presented. Experimental kinematic, force, and physiological signals are used to produce a fatigue metric. The metric is produced using time-delay embedding and PSW methods. The results showed that by using force and kinematic signals, an overall estimate of the muscle group state can be achieved. Further, when using electromyography (EMG) signals the fatigue metric can be used as a tool to evaluate muscles activation and load sharing patterns for individual muscles. The presented method will allow for fatigue evolution measurement outside a laboratory environment, which open doors to applications such as tracking the physical state of players during competition, workers in a plant, and patients undergoing in-home rehabilitation.

As computed tomography and related technologies have become mainstream tools across a broad range of scientific applications, each new generation of instrumentation produces larger volumes of more-complex 3D data. Lagging behind are step-wise improvements in computational methods to rapidly analyze these new large, complex datasets. Here we describe novel computational methods to capture and quantify volumetric information, and to efficiently characterize and compare shape volumes.

A novel method for bone fatigue monitoring and prediction.

Bone Rep

Bone fatigue, often manifest as stress fractures, is a common injury that plagues many individuals, adversely affect quality of life, and is an obstacle to extended human spaceflight. This manuscript details a pilot study that was conducted to determine if the Phase Space Warping (PSW) methodology could be used to monitor/predict fatigue failure in bone tissue. A Moon's beam experimental apparatus was used to perform variable amplitude fatigue tests on bovine bone specimens.

Objective: long-term wearable instantaneous heart rate (IHR) monitoring is essential to enable pervasive heart health and fitness management. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to robustly estimate the IHR from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals corrupted by large amounts of daily motion artifacts, which are one of the major impediments against the long-term IHR monitoring.

Methods: the corrupted ECG signals are first projected to a high-dimensional phase space, where the constructed phase portraits of heartbeats are of many new geometrical properties and are expected to be powerful patterns more immune to the motion artifacts.

Generalized Gravitational Entropy for Warped Anti-de Sitter Space.

For spacetimes that are not asymptotic to anti-de Sitter (non AAdS) space, we adapt the Lewkowycz-Maldacena procedure to find the holographic entanglement entropy. The key observation, which to our knowledge is not very well appreciated, is that asymptotic boundary conditions play an essential role on extending the replica trick to the bulk. For non AAdS, we expect the following three main modifications: (1) the expansion near the special surface has to be compatible with the asymptotic expansion; (2) periodic conditions are imposed to coordinates on the phase space with diagonalized symplectic structure, not to all fields appearing in the action; (3) evaluating the entanglement functional using the boundary term method amounts to evaluating the presymplectic structure at the special surface, where some additional exact form may contribute.
