AI Article Synopsis

  • The study explored the photochromic properties of natural 3-deoxyanthocyanidin pigments in safe solvents.
  • When luteolinidin was mixed with weakly acidic water and an organic solvent (with a permittivity of 20-34), it showed reversible colors when exposed to UV light and then shielded from light.
  • Solvents like 1,3-butanediol and ethanol, which are safe for food and cosmetics, were ideal for this color-changing process, and other 3-deoxyanthocyanidins like apigeninidin and tricetinidin also showed similar photochromic traits.

Article Abstract

The photochromic properties of some naturally occurring 3-deoxyanthocyanidin pigments were investigated in various nontoxic solvents. When luteolinidin, a representative 3-deoxyanthocyanidin, was dissolved in a mixture of weakly acidic water and an organic solvent with a relative permittivity between 20 and 34, it was possible to repeatedly induce coloration via ultraviolet irradiation and decoloration under light-shielded conditions. 1,3-Butanediol and ethanol, which are approved for use in foods, cosmetics, and household goods, were found to be appropriate organic solvents for this process. In addition, we confirmed that other 3-deoxyanthocyanidins, specifically apigeninidin and tricetinidin, which are commonly found in food grains and tea leaves, also exhibit photochromic properties.

Nowadays, benzimidazole and its derivatives are widely assembled into multifunctional materials with various properties such as mechanochromism, photochromism, thermochromism and electrochromism. Herein, two novel zinc(II) coordination compounds, [Zn(L)Br]·2HO (1) and [Zn(L)Cl]·2HO (2) (L = tetra(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)ethene), have been constructed one-pot facile synthesis from bis(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)methane (L) and zinc(II) salts. The ligand L with a CC double bond was formed by C-C coupling of two sp-C atoms of L in solvothermal synthesis, which provides a new strategy to generate the conjugation system conveniently.

Photostimulus-responsive fluorescent materials are promising for anticounterfeiting and UV printing due to rapid response and simple preparation. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to prepare photostimulus-responsive materials SP@HOF-olefin by integrating the photochromic molecule spiropyran (SP) with postsynthetic modified hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF-olefin). Compared to SP@HOF, the composites SP@HOF-olefin exhibit enhanced photochromic properties, such as a fast response speed, pronounced color contrast, and exceptional fatigue resistance.

Optically responsive materials are applied in sensing, actuators, and optical devices. One such class of material is dye-doped liquid crystal polymers that self-assemble into cholesteric mesophases that reflect visible light. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a family of linear and mildly crosslinked terpolymers prepared by the ROMP of norbornene-based monomers.

Nanographenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exhibit many intriguing physical properties and have potential applications across a range of scientific fields, including electronics, catalysis, and biomedicine. To accelerate the development of such applications, efficient and reliable methods for accessing functionalized analogs are required. Herein, we report the efficient synthesis of functionalized small nanographenes from readily available iodobiaryl and diarylacetylene derivatives a one-pot, multi-annulation sequence catalyzed by a single palladium catalyst.

The encapsulation of viologen derivatives in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to construct host-guest materials has been widely discussed owing to their distinctive spatial arrangement and physical/chemical properties. Herein, three new photochromic MOFs (NWM-1-3) have been successfully synthesized by 1,1,2,2-Tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) ligand as well as three different viologen derivatives based on host-guest strategy. Remarkably, NWM-1-3 exhibit a notable reversible photochromism change from yellow to green under 365 nm UV irradiation.
