Modern-day slave labor is one of the most pernicious and persistent social problems in Brazil. In the light of the need to implement a national occupational health policy, this paper discusses slave labor as a public health concern, highlighting possibilities for broadening strategies for vigilance and comprehensive care for this specific working population. Exploratory qualitative research was carried out based on the "social construction of reality" proposed by Lenoir, Berger and Luckmann. The investigation consisted of a theoretical review of modern-day slave labor on the national and international scene within the scope of the human, social and public health sciences and an analysis of social and political practices to tackle modern-day slave labor was conducted in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Semi-structured individual and group interviews with workers and representatives of social movements and public institutions were organized. The results reveal the theoretical and practical dimensions of slave labor and its relations with the health field and highlight the role and potential of public health in the enhancing of vigilance practices and health care of workers subjected to these chronic social conditions.

The EtherCAT fieldbus system is widely applied in different types of computerized numerical control (CNC) machine tools due to its outstanding communication performance. In the field of ultra-precision CNC, some machine tools employ controllers that integrate EtherCAT master functionality to achieve real-time communication with other devices; however, the open-source IgH EtherCAT master has rarely been applied to the CNC systems of ultra-precision machine tools. The feasibility of using the IgH EtherCAT master to meet the communication performance requirements of ultra-precision machine tools remains uncertain; therefore, it is necessary to validate the control effect on precision axes under the application of the IgH EtherCAT master.

Hydrological dynamics following partial removal of an oil well pad undergoing restoration to a boreal peatland.

Department of Geography and Environmental Management, University of Waterloo, 200 University Avenue West, Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3G1, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Many peatlands in North America's Western Boreal Plain have been affected by industrial activities, like the construction of oil well pads.
  • A study was conducted in Alberta to evaluate the hydrological functions of a partially removed well pad to see if it could support the growth of fen mosses for restoration purposes.
  • The findings indicated that while some areas of the pad maintained good water table levels, other parts experienced inconsistent water flow, highlighting the need for improvement in connecting the pad's hydrology with surrounding peatlands to better support fen moss establishment.

Maroons in Suriname and French Guiana descend from enslaved Africans who escaped the plantations during colonial times. Maroon farmers still cultivate a large diversity of rice, their oldest staple crop. The oral history and written records of Maroons by colonial authorities provide contrasting perspectives on the origins of Maroon rice.

In the past two decades, research in the field of chaotic synchronization has attracted extensive attention from scholars, and at the same time, more synchronization methods, such as chaotic master-slave synchronization, projection synchronization, sliding film synchronization, fractional-order synchronization and so on, have been proposed and applied to chaotic secure communication. In this paper, based on radial basis function neural network theory and the particle swarm optimisation algorithm, the RBFNN-PSO synchronisation method is proposed for the Sprott B chaotic system with external noise. The RBFNN controller is constructed, and its parameters are used as the particle swarm particle optimisation parameters, and the optimal values of the controller parameters are obtained by the PSO training method, which overcomes the influence of external noise and achieves the synchronisation of the master-slave system.

Edge Zeros and Boundary Spinons in Topological Mott Insulators.

We use a real-space slave-rotor theory of the physics of topological Mott insulators, using the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model as an example, and show that a topological gap in the Green function zeros corresponds to a gap in the bulk spinon spectrum and implies a gapless band of edge zeros and a spinon edge mode. We then consider an interface between a topological Mott insulator and a conventional topological insulator showing how the spinon edge mode of the topological Mott insulator combines with the spin part of the conventional electron topological edge state, leaving a non-Fermi liquid edge mode described by a gapless propagating holon and gapped spinon state. Our work demonstrates the physical meaning of Green function zeros and shows that interfaces between conventional and Mott topological insulators are a rich source of new physics.
