Electronic energy transfer (EET) between chromophores is of fundamental importance for many biological processes and optoelectronic devices. However, common models fall short in fully describing the process, especially in bichromophoric model systems with a donor and acceptor connected by a rigid linker providing perpendicular geometries. Herein, we report a novel strategy for preparing bichromophores containing adamantane or 2-(2-adamantylidene)adamantane as rigid spacers, providing a fixed distance between chromophores, and their parallel or perpendicular arrangement without chromophore rotation. New fluorophores were developed and linked via spiroatoms. Bichromophores with identical (blue-blue) or different (blue-red) chromophores were synthesized, either in orthogonal or parallel geometry. These were characterized by absorption/fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy, and fluorescence antibunching measurements. Based on the Förster point-dipole approximation, EET efficiencies were estimated by using geometrical parameters from (time-dependent) density functional calculations. For bichromophores with parallel geometry, the predicted EET efficiencies were near unity and fit the measurements. In spite of estimated values around 0.4 and 0.5, 100 % efficiency was observed also for bichromophores with orthogonal geometry. The new rigid scaffolds presented here open new possibilities for the synthesis of bichormophores with well-defined parallel or perpendicular geometry.

Optically responsive materials are applied in sensing, actuators, and optical devices. One such class of material is dye-doped liquid crystal polymers that self-assemble into cholesteric mesophases that reflect visible light. We report here the synthesis and characterization of a family of linear and mildly crosslinked terpolymers prepared by the ROMP of norbornene-based monomers.

An engineered Palivizumab IgG2 subclass for synthetic gp130 and fas mediated signaling.

Recently, we phenocopied Interleukin (IL-)6 signaling using the dimerized single-chain variable fragment (scFv) derived from the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) IgG1-antibody Palivizumab (PLHFc) to activate a Palivizumab anti-idiotypic nanobody (AIP)-gp130 receptor fusion protein. Palivizumab was unable to activate STAT3 signaling, so we aimed to create a similar ligand capable of triggering this pathway. Here, we created three variants of the ligand called PLH0Fc, PLH4Fc and PLH8Fc by shortening the spacer region connecting PLH and Fc from 23 amino acids in PLHFc to 0 amino acids or expanding it by rigid linkers of 4 or 8 alpha helical loops, respectively.

In this study, we investigate how modulating organic spacers in perovskites influences their X-ray detection performance and reveal the mechanism of low-dose detection with high sensitivity using femtosecond-transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS). Particularly, we employ N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediammonium (TMPDA) and N,N-dimethylphenylene-p-diammonium (DPDA) as organic spacers to synthesize 2D perovskite single crystals (SCs). We find that DPDA-based SCs exhibit reduced interplanar spacing between inorganic layers, leading to increased lattice packing.

In this work, we have explored the metal ion sensing properties of two bisbenzimidazole-based fluorescent probes, that differ in their conformational flexibility, in an aqueous medium. The compound with a flexible methyl spacer (1) experienced blue shifts in its absorption and emission maxima (along with a turn-off response) upon the addition of Hg ions. On the contrary, the compound with a relatively rigid structure (2) showed red shifts in both its absorption and emission maxima (along with a turn-off response) when treated with Hg under similar conditions.

Sulfonated indocyanines 3 and 5 (sCy3, sCy5) are widely used to label biomolecules. Their high molar absorption coefficients and lack of spectral overlap with biopolymers make them ideal as linker components for rapid assessment of bioconjugate stoichiometry. We recently found that the determination of the sCy3:sCy5 molar ratio in a conjugate from its optical absorption spectrum is not straightforward, as the sCy3:sCy5 absorbance ratio at the maxima tends to be larger than expected.
